About

Entrepreneur at heart. Crossed the startup - govt chasm. Helped build next-gen digital public infrastructure platforms for the Government of India. Was Architect for the DigiLocker project under the Digital India Mission at National eGovernance Division, Ministry of Electronics & IT, Govt of India. DigiLocker is a key component of #IndiaStack – it is a national digital platform for paperless governance & electronic service delivery. The project is aimed at digitizing citizen data records & building an ecosystem for issuance and usage of verifiable credentials in a consented, secure and privacy compliant way. DigiLocker also lies at the heart of other emerging digital platforms & services from the Indian Government - NAD (National Academic Depository), API Setu (National API Gateway), SSO (Single Sign on). Previously as Cofounder of SlideShare, I've had the opportunity to build & scale a global scale internet company. SlideShare is like "The Wikipedia for Professionals" - it's mission is to empower the world’s professionals through knowledge centric content. SlideShare was acquired by LinkedIn in 2012. Deeply involved in the startup ecosystem - I frequently speak at tech conferences & volunteer to mentor startups at industry bodies like iSpirt, TiE, NASSCOM. My motto in general is to share away whatever I learn. For someone who founded a company with the word “share” in its name, I’m a big believer in the sharing credo – the more you share, the more it helps others, the ecosystem grows & some of that +ve karma flows back to you. Also involved in startups as angel investor & advisor. I was an early instigator on the Indian startup scene. Played a role in kick-starting the cult of technology ‘unconferences’ called BarCamps by organizing India & Asia’s first such event in Delhi in Mar'06. BarCamps were regarded as "Ground Zero" for the Indian tech startup ecosystem back then - they were instrumental in stimulating grassroots level tech entrepreneurship. I wrote Webyantra (www.webyantra.net), previously one of the most widely read Indian tech blogs. Earlier I had a career in the consumer goods space, having worked with PepsiCo, Asian Paints & Godrej.

Architect @ National DigiLocker Project

Jan 2015Aug 2021 · 6 yrs 7 mos · New Delhi, Delhi, India

  • DigiLocker, a key component of #IndiaStack, is a project under Digital India, the Indian Government's flagship program aimed at transforming India into a digitally empowered society and knowledge economy.
  • The project's goal is to build a national federated data & document network for India's 1.3 BN citizens. This will function as an inter-operable public-private ecosystem for paperless service delivery by digitizing citizen records and enabling their digital usage. Indian citizens are issued various documents & certificates over their lifetime by diff government agencies (e.g. Passport, PAN Card, Driving License, Voter Card, school & college certificates). DigiLocker is aimed at digitizing these citizen records, issuing them electronically to Indian citizens (via their Aadhaar number) as verifiable credentials, and enabling a digital transaction ecosystem to minimize (or eliminate) paper usage. Added benefits: transparency, reduced bureaucracy, corruption, besides cost savings.
  • Current project status & other details available here https://digilocker.gov.in/. More #IndiaStack details at http://indiastack.org/
