There is a question I return to almost every day, as I lead one of India’s oldest and most distinguished schools: What are we actually educating children for? Not for exams. Not for university rankings. And certainly not to be outcompeted by algorithms. I believe education, at its best, is an act of formation — shaping not just what a young person knows, but who they become. Their capacity for empathy. Their ethical courage. Their ability to sit with uncertainty and still choose rightly. I am the Principal of Mayo College, Ajmer — one of India’s great boys’ boarding schools, founded in 1875, set on 187 acres of extraordinary campus. I came to this role after a career that moved from the corporate world (London Business School, global finance and management) to the classroom — a journey I have never regretted for a single day. “In business, you learn the value of metrics.
