Prerna Subramanian, PhD — Product Engineer
I am an interdisciplinary researcher and Assistant Professor at O.P. Jindal Global University. My approach to research is intersectional, feminist, realist, and historically materialist, combining attention to discourse, representation, institutions, and lived material conditions. I am trained in qualitative research methods from Cultural Studies, including critical discourse analysis, textual and visual analysis, archival research, thematic coding, oral history, and interdisciplinary close reading. My current work also draws on realist methods in policy research, particularly to study how mental health moves through institutional spaces, administrative systems, policy documents, professional services, and everyday experiences of care. My work specifically explore how queer, trans, caste-marked, and otherwise precarious lives move through institutions, cities, screens, and everyday cultures. My research is especially interested in how media cultures shape public feeling, how cinematic and digital spaces organise belonging, and how institutions produce care, exclusion, mobility, and delay. My writing appears in Feminist Media Histories, Gender, Place & Culture, Agenda, Sociology Compass, Media Asia, South Asian Review, and with Duke University Press. My current book project examines trans intimacies and urban governance in Indian streaming media. Teaching remains central to my intellectual life. I teach writing within justice frameworks, along with courses on media, geography, gender, sexuality, caste, law, and urban life. Across my teaching, I care about helping students read the world carefully, write with clarity, and understand how power works through ordinary spaces, images, documents, and habits. Alongside academic work, I am a freelance editor registered with the Editorial Freelancers Association. I offer developmental editing, content editing, and interdisciplinary academic writing support for scholars at different stages of their careers. I also review proposals and research statements for aspirant PhD scholars and scholars or practitioners moving into academia. My approach is attentive to neurodivergence, shaped by my own lived experience with ADHD and RSD. I am not taking on mentorship work during semester seasons. For editing, proposal review, or academic writing inquiries, you can email me at prerna.geeta@gmail.com. I do not monitor my DMs.
