Presenting logical facts about climate change doesn’t create logical outcomes, because humans aren't rational actors. Change happens through inspiration, conversation and community. So why are we still presenting scientific facts and guilt tripping people thinking it will change their behaviour? If you’re a sustainability manager, engaging your own internal team is a huge challenge. You’re juggling data collection, reporting demands as well as trying to drive behavior change to actually make an impact. But you’re also the department of one out of an organisation of hundreds, if not thousands of employees. Your budgets are being cut, but reporting demands are increasing and you’re being asked to do more than ever with less resources. The result? Ambitious sustainability targets are trapped inside shiny PDFs that fail to drive meaningful change, leaving under-resourced sustainability professionals (that’s you!) battling burnout and colleague apathy and unsatisfied with the impact you’re having for the effort you’re putting in. After years of delivering sustainability workshops to small businesses, I realised that for action to happen, people need to feel like they were part of making the decision. So I created the Small99 Action Box. By replacing dry slide decks and digital tools with a gamified, analogue toolkit, we help "Sustainability Departments of One" to make the business case for sustainability. Stop presenting and start facilitating and create hands-on action plans with colleagues previously disinterested in sustainability. But it doesn't stop there! Humans need real connection to drive change. I also realised that most people do care about climate change, but they are often alienated from conversations on it. They’re attending talks and panel sessions, but rarely get the time to talk about what is going on in their local community. So, I started People, Planet, Pint. It's simple: we get like-minded, "light green" people into a local pub, give them a free pint, and see what happens. Quietly passionate people start to realise they’re not the “weird” one, but just that they’ve been in the wrong room. We are building the "park run of sustainability” to give everyday people a soft entry point to sustainability, and to start conversations that change their local environment for the better. What started as a simple idea at COP26 in Glasgow has grown into 75 free monthly meetups across the UK and internationally. Whether you're trying to unblock internal apathy, or just want to chat over a pint, let's connect!
