Sarah Carcone — CEO
Growing up, I always pictured my future self as a business professional. First it was, “I’m right on top of that, Rose!” and later “Thirty, flirty and thriving!” ringing in my head. All I had to do was put on a suit, look busy and I’d be successful...right? Like many of us, the reality gut-punch hit hard post-JMU. Instead of spending petty cash or designing magazine covers, I found myself driving aimlessly in DC traffic, in a stick shift sedan, in heels through my outside sales territory while working at a chain restaurant in the evenings for extra cash. Don’t get me wrong, it was fun having minimal responsibility, but my 401K wasn’t exactly booming and personal fulfillment was lacking. While many of us become leaders because it seems like the obvious next step, I pursued the path with intention. All it took was a short stint managing a few new hires for me to discover exactly what I needed out of a career. I made the decision to switch to inside sales and pursue management opportunities. I had practically no leadership experience, but my confidence never waned; I approached each of my interviews with the clarity that a path to leadership was my top priority. After a few years as a top performer, I became a new manager hiring a sales team from scratch. My first year in management, I made 1989 mistakes, but I learned the most about structured sales methodology, the craft of interviewing sales candidates, motivating others, and time management. Over the next 10 years, I managed teams in both land and expansion roles. Sometimes there was rapid growth and other times there was downsizing. Mergers, acquisitions and leadership shifts all afforded me those above opportunities and also taught me not to sweat the changes. Work + a busy household means that I like to spend my downtime relaxing. #luxuryismyhobby I enjoy reading, tidying/organizing, harassing my dog (Penny aka Pencil) and spending quality time with family and friends.
