About

Currently, I’m the deputy editor of Future Perfect, Vox’s section on the myriad challenges and efforts in making the world a better place. There, I edit stories on global poverty, public health, philanthropy, progress, artificial intelligence, food systems, and the future of well-being. I also oversee the Future Perfect fellowship program, where I help develop the next generation of thoughtful reporters. My pipeline work centers on training those who do not have a formal education in journalism to produce smart, digestible explainers. As a writer, I specialize in consumerism, the intersection of pop culture and identity, issues of bureaucracy and colonialism, and food. You’ve probably seen my work in Atmos Magazine, Vice, Bitch Media, Gothamist, Jezebel, and more. I graduated from New York University with a double major in Honors Journalism and Global Liberal Studies (Politics, Rights and Development). At NYU, I served the Editor-in-Chief of NYU Local, and developed breaking coverage around the pandemic across the university’s 12 global sites. I am also an alumna of Columbia’s rigorous mid-career science journalism program, where I studied Indigenous rights, food ecology, and land management. Beyond my writing and editing, I see myself as more of a product design thinker. Talk to me about newsletter design, improving UX/UI interactions for news audiences, and the future of interactive storytelling. (Aaaaaand, I’m a huge Bad Bunny and Formula 1 fan.) Best way to get in touch is by emailing me: izzie.ramirez@voxmedia.com!

Deputy Editor, Future Perfect

May 2022Feb 2026 · 3 yrs 9 mos · New York, United States

  • Hire, train, and edit three new-to-journalism fellows each year; develop an intensive journalism curriculum with workshops; and scout story opportunities according to their interests. (This year, we had 1300+ applicants.)
  • Produce and edit the bi-weekly Future Perfect newsletter, which has 97,000+ subscribers. The newsletter grew 12% year-over-year in 2024.
  • Assist in directing coverage for the Future Perfect team around public health, global poverty, climate, psychedelics, cutting-edge science, bureaucratic failures, and more.
  • Occasionally write explainers on consumerism, colonialism, and culture as time allows. My January 2023 story on the declining quality of consumer goods received more than 500,000 unique pageviews, and was the top story that month.
  • Ideate and execute new experimental story formats. In May 2024, I collaborated with the special projects manager and executive editor to develop new sidebars. I also programmed and developed guidance for a vertical video sidebar that integrates a news explainer TikTok with an audience callout — an idea I had from the previous year.
  • Execute the editorial vision for the yearly Future Perfect 50 list, where the team nominates 50 thinkers, activists, and scholars working on solutions for today’s (and tomorrow’s) problems. Developed the first truly interactive iteration of the list in 2024, with a quiz, randomizer, and key celebrity interviews.

  • Consulted on brand partnerships (such as HBO Max) and led cross-departmental projects
  • Deeply analyzed Google Analytics traffic and strategized upcoming stories that would perform well on different platforms/audiences.
  • Crafted a food journalism training program for college students that featured basic news writing, interviewing skills, editing, photography, social media reporting, and more.
  • The web redesign and color schemes I developed prior to my departure were implemented in August 2024 once the content management system migrated from Secret Sauce (a Ruby project) to WordPress.
