Google

VP of Engineering

Jan 2006Jan 2019 · 13 yrs · Mountain View, CA

  • Ran engineering for two different Google products, each with more than a Billion users, managing teams in San Francisco, Seattle, New York, Haifa, Zurich, Dublin, Warsaw, Bangalore, and Hyderabad.
  • Led Google’s security engineering team as well as the compute teams responsible for building the Google Cloud Platform, including Kubernetes, Compute Engine, and App Engine. My teams worked in Silicon Valley, Seattle, New York, Chicago, and Warsaw.
  • Led Google Maps & Local data engineering and operations, totaling over 5000 full time employees and contractors. By re-organizing the teams, hiring new leadership, re-implementing aging infrastructure, addressing problems of technical debt, defining new processes, and introducing metrics, benchmarks, and a relentless focus on data quality, I was responsible for a significant and measurable increase in the quality and comprehensiveness of Google’s map and local business data, demonstrably exceeding that of all competitors at the time. I managed teams in Silicon Valley, Seattle, New York, Dublin, Hyderabad and Bangalore.
  • Led Gmail engineering. I refocused engineering attention on infrastructure, system availability, performance, efficiency, cost and scale-ability, making Gmail profitable on a per-user basis for the first time ever and with user growth over 30% annually, allowing Gmail to grow without hurting the company financially. During my tenure with Gmail, there were no global outages and the service maintained 99.99% uptime, which included a redesign and hot swap of Gmail’s back end from an aging log structured file system to modern distributed transaction architecture, and the biggest data migration Google had ever done. Today there are more than 1.5B active users and more Gmail accounts than there are people on earth. I managed teams in Silicon Valley, Seattle, and Zurich.
  • Led the Google datacenter software teams, running the compiler teams, datacenter power management, and automated datacenter machine health.

Transmeta

VP of Engineering

Jan 1998Jan 2006 · 8 yrs · Santa Clara, CA

  • Section 16 officer at Transmeta, a venture-backed fabless semi-conductor company which designed high performance, low power Intel-compatible microprocessors. Transmeta used a proprietary processor architecture combined with “Code Morphing” software, which implemented a virtual x86 microprocessor, creating Intel compatibility entirely through software. Transmeta filed for an initial public offering on Nov 7, 2000.
  • I helped build and ship the first product, “Crusoe” then I led the software team on Transmeta’s second generation microprocessor product, “Efficeon”, eventually leading the entire software department.
  • My team shipped two silicon revisions (130nm and 90nm) and three SW releases in production volume (millions of units).
  • Crusoe was named by IEEE Spectrum as one of the chips which "shook the world".
