Roland Jakab — CEO
Scientific research, innovation and technology are increasingly shaped by how well complex systems are designed, governed and connected. As CEO of HUN-REN – Hungary’s national research network – my focus is on building a high-performance research ecosystem that delivers excellence in discovery and measurable impact for society and the economy. HUN-REN is one of Central Europe’s largest research networks, bringing together 30 research institutes and centres and a community of over 5000 researchers, engineers and experts. This scale creates a unique platform for interdisciplinary collaboration and long-term scientific capability across the natural and life sciences, mathematics and strategically important research domains. Leadership at this level is about creating the conditions for world-class science: strong and trusted institutions, international top-class partnerships, shared infrastructure and a collaborative culture. HUN-REN is deeply embedded in global research networks, while at the same time committed to strengthening Hungary’s position in the international scientific and innovation landscape. A central priority is turning research into innovation. Beyond excellence in discovery, we place strong emphasis on the utilisation of research results, the translation of scientific knowledge into applied solutions, technologies and services, and the reinforcement of Hungary’s innovation ecosystem. By connecting research more effectively with industry, startups and public stakeholders, HUN-REN contributes directly to economic competitiveness and sustainable growth. Artificial intelligence is a critical enabler within this broader mission. AI is treated not as a standalone solution, but as a core element of modern research infrastructure alongside data, platforms, governance and human expertise. When integrated responsibly, AI can accelerate discovery, support complex reasoning and strengthen research workflows, while scientific integrity, transparency and accountability remain non-negotiable. My background in digital transformation and technology strategy informs a system-level approach to research leadership, with a clear focus on impact-driven innovation. Active engagement in science and innovation policy ensures that emerging technologies serve knowledge creation, economic value and societal benefit. The next generation of scientific leadership will be defined by research systems that invest in shared capabilities rather than isolated excellence and that consistently turn world-class science into innovation, impact and economic progress.
