Smriti Zubin Irani is a prominent politician and a former TV star. She left a lucrative career to join politics over two decades ago and has been a Cabinet minister from 2014-24, a three-time Member of Parliament and has held various posts in BJP. She created history in 2019 by defeating the then-president of Congress from Amethi, a seat seen as nearly impossible to win by a non-Congress politician. Mrs. Irani earlier represented Gujarat in the Upper House, Rajya Sabha (2011-2017), and was re-elected from Gujarat in 2017. Her past ministerial portfolios include Ministry of Women & Child Development (2019-24), Ministry of Minority Affairs (2022-24) — The first non-Muslim to hold the position, Ministry of Human Resource Development (2014-16), Ministry of Information & Broadcasting (2017-18), and Ministry of Textiles (2016-21). She was India’s youngest Cabinet Minister in Modi 1.0 & 2.0 and the first woman to hold office as Union Minister for HRD & Textiles. In the 126th Assembly of Inter-Parliamentary Union, she was unanimously elected as a Member representing the Asia Pacific Region to the Task Force responsible for the 1st ever Committee for Young Parliamentarians in the IPU. At the same Assembly, Mrs. Irani was also unanimously elected by Member Nations as Rapporteur for the Standing Committee on Sustainable Development, Finance & Trade. The World Economic Forum named her as the Young Global Leader from India for the year 2015. She also served as the USAID Goodwill Ambassador to India for the WHO-ORS programme. She has served in the BJP in various posts such as National Vice President, National President of Women's Wing, Vice President of Maharashtra Youth Wing, National Secretary (twice), 5-term Member of the National Executive, Maharashtra State Secretary & has significantly and successfully pursued Permanent Commission for Women in the Indian Army. She also launched 'Saksham'- the 1st ever Vision Document released by any political organization in India to uplift the Differently-abled in India. Besides being an active social & political activist, she has had a successful career as a Media Professional for over 2 decades starting from 1994. She has worked across different fields of media right from creating content for news & entertainment Television networks to acting in over 22 television series, 2 films, and 5 theatre projects in 4 Indian languages. Apart from her contributions as an actor, her work in television networks ranged from direction, scriptwriting to production. She has also contributed as a columnist to 2 national dailies.
