Saptarshi Sanyal — Associate Consultant
I am an architectural historian and educator whose work examines modern architecture as a process shaped by labour, material practices, and cultural exchange rather than as a finished object. I am currently Assistant Professor (Tenure Track) in the Department of Architecture at the National University of Singapore, with prior teaching experience at the School of Planning and Architecture, New Delhi (2013–25), and The Bartlett School of Architecture, UCL (2019–21), where I completed my PhD in Architectural History and Theory as a Commonwealth Scholar (2018–22). My doctoral thesis received an Honourable Mention at the 2023 UC Berkeley South Asia Art and Architecture Dissertation Prize. My research focuses on modern architecture and urbanism in colonial and postcolonial South Asia, with particular attention to under-documented actors, experimental pedagogies, and the social life of construction. It sits at the intersection of postcolonial and production studies, construction history, and the environmental humanities, and has appeared in peer-reviewed venues including The Journal of Architecture, architectural research quarterly, and Architecture Beyond Europe. I currently serve on the editorial board of Architecture Beyond Europe and have previously served on the board of SPACE: Journal of Planning and Architecture.
