About

Mixed methods UX researcher with an academic background in cognitive psychology. I use behaviour science to understand humans, what they need and how they use technology. I’m a quantitative scientist by training, now spending most of my time doing qualitative user researcher. I have domain expertise in e-commerce, EdTech, music technology and physical-to-digital experiences. Academically, my background is in experimental psychology; using psychometrics, applied statistics and R to model behavioural data. My PhD research focused on modelling memory and learning of musical instruments. I'm passionate about giving back to the UX research community. I founded PhD to UXR to help academics make the career transition to UX research. On making my own career transition from my PhD to UX research I realised that academics have incredible value, but also unique challenges, in entering the field. PhD to UXR supports academics on that journey, and we’ve successfully helped hundreds of former academics land UXR roles. Come join our community on Facebook!

  • In my PhD research, I specialised in how humans learn movement and sound. I investigated how the brain integrates the movements you make with the sounds they produce, and how different types of auditory feedback can enhance motor learning. Using cognitive theories of auditory-motor learning, I developed a series of EdTech products to improve learning in music education.
  • I built an AR "smart guitar" that teachers you how to play, by sensing your hand position and providing augmented auditory feedback to help the user understand how to correct their positioning.
  • I designed a piano app interface that teaches users what to play without the need to learn to musical notation, by focusing on finger movements.
  • I designed and conducted a series of end-to-end experimental research projects to optimise auditory-motor learning using interactive technology, resulting in insights that increased learning by up to 300% from baseline.
  • Methods used:
  • Literature review
  • Experimentation
  • A/B testing
  • Surveys
  • Psychometrics
  • Quantitative data analysis, applied statistics, R

  • I develop a psychometric test battery for absolute pitch in collaboration with my research team. We tested the battery on 100+ participants, collecting quantitative and qualitative data on behaviour and subjective experience. I supervised 6 student interns to collect further behavioural and psychometric data for the project. I analysed and statistically modelled the data in R, including cluster analysis and regression.
