About

I have joined the Deep Ocean Mission marine project at ILS Bhubaneswar, assigned to Dr. Sunil Raghav. Currently, I am learning techniques involved in next generation sequencing for the project, in addition to immunology techniques and computational biology as part of lab work. Being in the lab, brainstorming new ideas and understanding the nuances of the experiments have always encouraged me. So, I am extremely excited about it and I hope to contribute significantly to the project and marine research. 2017-2024: As a PhD Scholar at IIT Guwahati (under the supervision of Prof. V. S. Moholkar), I am passionate and intrigued about bacterial fermentations and the molecular techniques associated with them. I am an aspiring COMPUTATIONAL BIOLOGIST. My doctoral research revolves around gas fermentation-based biological gas to liquid (BioGTL) techniques for the enhancement of methane (C1) capture and waste-to-energy conversion that encompasses the UN's sustainable development goals: SDG 7 (Affordable and clean energy) and SDG 13 (climate action). In a nutshell, I used PCR techniques for gene detection, statistically optimized the methanol production process, intensified methane bioconversion through sonication techniques and studied the structure and ligand interaction of methane monooxygenase enzyme catalyst using computational biology techniques (sequence alignment, homology modelling, molecular docking and molecular dynamic simulations). Summarily, my extensive research background encompasses key research skills in bacterial fermentation, bioprocess engineering, molecular biology techniques, analytical skills, programming languages and computational biology, which enable me to apply innovative and interdisciplinary approaches to my research work. My ultimate goal is to contribute SUSTAINABLY to the advancement of science by leveraging the principles and applications of biotechnology.

  • I worked on methane (gas) fermentation to methanol (liquid) using methanotrophs (methane-consuming bacteria). In a nutshell, I used PCR techniques for gene detection, statistically optimized the methanol production process, intensified methane bioconversion using sonication techniques and studied the structure and ligand interaction of methane monooxygenase enzyme catalyst using computational biology techniques (sequence alignment, homology modelling, molecular docking and molecular dynamics simulations).
  • Significance:
  • This research addresses the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 7: Affordable and Clean Energy, SDG 12: Ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns and SDG 13: Climate Action) and "Adaptation to climate change", FIT for 55, RED III under EU missions and Horizon Europe. This research presents a novel approach for utilizing methanotrophs to convert methane, a major environmental concern, into a clean and sustainable biofuel source, bio-methanol. By optimizing the bioconversion process and elucidating the key enzymatic mechanism, this work paves the way for developing more efficient and scalable bio-methanol production methods. This research has the potential to contribute significantly to advancements in renewable energy solutions and greenhouse gas mitigation strategies.

  • Published: Cost Effective Production of Penicillin and Biogas from Rotten Oranges by Microbial Fermentation Technique
  • Key Findings:
  • Penicillin Production: This study demonstrated the successful production of penicillin from rotten orange juice using Penicillium fungus grown as a surface mat culture.
  • Media Optimization: The research identified that supplementing orange juice with specific nutrients, like ammonium sulfate and peptone, and adjusting the pH level, can significantly improve penicillin production compared to using raw orange juice alone.
  • Biogas Production: The study confirmed the feasibility of generating biogas through an anaerobic fermentation process using a combination of orange peels and cow dung. The biogas yield was found to be substantially higher compared to that using cow dung alone.
  • Significance: (UN's SDG 7: Affordable and clean energy and SDG 12: Ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns)
  • Waste Reduction: This research offers a promising approach to utilize waste generated, specifically rotten oranges, for production of valuable products like penicillin. This can significantly contribute to reducing organic waste and promoting a more sustainable food processing industry.
  • Resource Recovery: The project demonstrates the potential for recovering valuable resources from waste oranges.
  • Cost-Effectiveness: Utilizing readily available waste materials like rotten oranges and cow dung can potentially lead to a more cost-effective approach to penicillin production and biogas generation compared to traditional methods.
  • Environmental Benefits: By diverting waste from landfills and promoting resource recovery, this research contributes to a more sustainable waste management system and reduces environmental pollution.
  • Overall, this study highlights the potential of utilizing waste oranges for the production of valuable products and biogas, promoting a circular economy and resource recovery in the food processing industry.
