About

A mentor once told me: "Figure out what two things you're most interested in, and the intersection of those two things is where you need to focus all of your professional energy." For me, those two things are technology and business...and that's why I've spent the last few years building tech companies from the ground up. Meet my next venture, Cybr. Cybr aims to solve a growing problem: the world faces a shortage of cybersecurity skills, and organizations struggle to understand what they need and how to find talent. Prior to Cybr, I joined Linux Academy as one of the first employees, helping it grow into the leading cloud training platform from $4m to $40m in revenue in less than 4 years. When we were acquired and merged with A Cloud Guru in December 2019 through a Bain Capital acquisition, we had scaled to over 200 employees. The merger resulted in a 400-person organization with $80m in revenue ($100m+ just a few months later). By then, we had helped hundreds of thousands pass certifications and learn to use the cloud - from individuals all the way to Fortune 500 organizations. The combined organization was acquired a year and a half later for $2bn by Pluralsight. Before Linux Academy - in January 2015 - I founded Scale Your Code which was acquired by Linux Academy in December of 2016. Scale Your Code enabled you to learn from some of the biggest names in IT, and experts who helped build Stack Overflow, Ruby on Rails, reddit, Netflix, and much more.

VP Cloud Transformation

Jan 2020Mar 2020 · 2 mos

  • Reporting to the President of A Cloud Guru (post-acquisition), my roles and responsibilities were very similar to the VP of Growth position but hyper-focused on Azure partnerships from the perspective of both Linux Academy and A Cloud Guru.

VP Growth

  • As Vice President of Growth, my primary areas of responsibility included:
  • Establishing and growing high-level partnerships
  • Sales & Marketing enablement for high-value opportunities
  • Running experiments on the marketing website to increase conversion rates
  • In a matter of months, I drove significant traction with key partners (including AWS) which increased revenue and generated other opportunities that we did not have prior access to.
  • Worked closely with sales to help close large deals with executives at Fortune 500 companies, and collaborated with marketing to create lead-generating content such as ebooks, videos, blog posts, podcast episodes, and more. My technical and product expertise was critical for successful execution.
  • Working closely with marketing, I hypothesized and ran experiments on pricing, business, and content pages in order to drive higher conversion rates for paid & free individual accounts, as well as B2B quote and demo requests. Our successful experiments resulted in direct revenue increases.

Chief Product Officer

  • As CPO, I led our Product and Marketing teams with the responsibility of increasing content consumption, platform engagement, generating leads, and driving revenue.
  • Starting with a product team of 3, we grew it to over 15 in order to keep up with designs, project management, technical writing, product QA, and more. Our team was responsible for project scopes, designs, management, and eventually product QA. At one point in time, we were managing over 15 different customer-facing projects simultaneously while also serving internal customers.
  • Some of our key achievements include: completing the migration of two different platforms into one (Cloud Assessments into Linux Academy), redesigning the entire search and content discovery experience, the launch of our brand new Business Dashboard which provided new features such as more advanced reporting for administrators to measure their ROI, and decreased page load times compared to the prior Business Dashboard. These were significant steps towards our changing focus from B2C to B2B. It required that we work hand-in-hand with engineering, and closely with all of Linux Academy's departments, as well as directly and indirectly with customers, in order to prioritize efforts and build *the* leading online cloud training platform.
  • At this time, the marketing team was driving almost 100% of our B2B revenue through inbound leads. Even with a price increase, we achieved new daily highs in terms of revenue generated by individual and business sign-ups, and we had our most successful Black Friday / Cyber Monday ever. Partnering with our Head of Demand Generation, we exceeded our end-of-year revenue target, adding millions of dollars in new ARR within a single quarter.
  • As the teams were growing at a rapid pace to keep up with an increasing amount of responsibility, we decided to re-structure at the beginning of 2020, and I took on a different role that filled an expanding gap.

  • Helped scope, build, and launch a new product line called Cloud Assessments, focusing mostly on the LaaS (Labs as a service) platform and creating the first assessments that test a student's abilities to complete real-world scenarios in real AWS environments and then provide tailored training recommendations based on their performance with a detailed report of what they missed, all automated through our custom and advanced Assessments Engine.
  • This assessment ability was unprecedented and even had AWS left wondering how we built it on their platform.
  • After laying the groundwork for content, assessments, and lab environments creation in our new platforms, I was responsible for training a subset of our content team as we began transitioning all of our content creation to these new systems.
  • While Cloud Assessments was completely merged into Linux Academy's platform instead of remaining an independent product, all content management and creation is now on these new systems.
  • (Press release for Cloud Assessments BETA in March 2017: https://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20170314005103/en/Linux-Academy-Launches-Cloud-Assessments-Platform-Test)

Instructor and Full Stack Developer

  • Responsibilities included developing and maintaining our Hands-On Labs engine by troubleshooting, scaling the platform, deploying new features, and implementing security controls to combat lab abuse. I stopped multiple ongoing attacks from wracking up tens of thousands of dollars in expenses due to bitcoin mining attempts. I had to build security functionality to overcome AWS' own IAM limitations at the time (it's come a long way since then). Eventually, we built a dedicated team to take over Hands-On Labs and handle this responsibility.
  • At the same time, I authored the following highly-rated certification training courses for AWS certifications:
  • AWS Certified Developer - Associate Level course
  • AWS Certified SysOps Administrator - Associate Level course
  • AWS Certified DevOps Engineer - Professional Level course
  • These courses have been used by thousands around the world to pass the certification exams.
  • Created comprehensive courses for:
  • AWS Lambda Deep Dive
  • AWS Backup Strategies
