• As a summer intern at the Indian Statistical Institute in 2014, I had the opportunity to research stream ciphers under the supervision of Dr. Gautham Sekar. After spending a few weeks learning the ropes, I began working on the stream cipher RC4. In a short time, I was able to detect what I believe are hitherto undiscovered related-key weaknesses of the cipher. A by-product of this research was an interesting combinatorial problem that I was able to solve with directions from Dr. Sekar. In addition to this research, in the two months that I spent at the ISI Chennai, I also learned to use the NIST Statistical Test Suite to perform a battery of tests on the RC4 and some of its variants such as the RCR-64 and HC-256.
