At eBay I worked on core platform services used by most of the company. I headed the following initiatives.
rest.ebay.com - This framework processes message formats in stream and converts them to other formats in real time. Used for several internal and external use cases at eBay, it can serve diverse response formats. The framework that runs this sub-domain handles more than 1 billion requests / day. It is capable of working at overheads of < 5%. A domain specific language (DSL) dictates the rules the framework should follow to serve a response. Responses are diverse and can include anything from a RSS feed to binary formats (say pictures for items shown on eBay). eBay is in the process of applying a patent for this framework.
SOA Framework - Used by most developers at eBay to write APIs that are part of developer.ebay.com. The framework powers most of the web services written inside eBay. The framework is flexible and can work with several data formats and transports. An open source version of the framework is available at ebayopensource.org.
SOA governance - A framework that governs assets and their life-cycle. This framework acts as a repository that can be used to search for assets across eBay. Assets can include Services / WSDL files / etc and each asset is governed by its own life-cycle. An API layer provides access to meta-data information pertaining to each asset.
