About

Thanks for visiting my profile! I am the founder of TribeROI, author of the book Community-in-a-Box, and a startup advisor based in Taipei and NYC. You can reach me at mark@triberoi.com if you interested in how to build, grow, and scale communities and measure their business impact. I previously worked at AWS sharing the stories of how founders across the globe benefit from building and scaling their startups on AWS. In that capacity, I created content, spoke at events & supported startup communities. During that time, I launched the Founders in the Cloud newsletter for startup founders with over 7,000 subscribers as well as the AWS Startups Show, a live audio show with 100K listeners, where I interviewed startup founders from seed stage to IPO about their startup journey. Before AWS, I was at Stack Overflow to help launch and commercialize their SaaS Q&A platform and then led efforts to expand business in APAC working with C-level executives to help them understand how to improve software delivery performance and team collaboration. During this time, I started DEV.BIZ.OPS, a long standing community of over 4,000 technology leaders about coding, developer culture, engineering enablement, and the power of communities. Previously, I launched the Enterprise Sales Forum, a global community of 30,000 B2B sales professionals that met in-person and virtually across 24 local chapters from Singapore to London and everywhere in between to share ideas, network with peers, learn new skills, and become more successful salespeople. I began my life in startups as the founder of an enterprise HR startup tackling the talent misalignment problem working with some of the largest Fortune 500 companies. While our exit was small, everything I know today about startups I learned from the work I did there. Earlier in my career, I worked at a various technology companies including Oracle, E.piphany and Siebel in individual contributor and leadership roles. I started my career as a software engineer that turned accidental sales person along the way and figured out how to thrive through the change. I graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from Boston University. When not working, I like to tour around the globe eating the best street food, and I can generally be seen rocking out to extreme metal.

Community-in-a-box

Author

Sep 2020Present · 5 yrs 6 mos

  • A practical guide for community builders on building and scaling professional communities that thrive and transform the lives of the people within them through virtual and in-person events.
  • Community is a hot topic in 2020. Enterprises, startups, investors, entrepreneurs, and creators are all jumping on board launching communities or building products for communities. This is especially timely given a global pandemic that has left people longing for human connection.
  • And then there are the people like me who just wanted to bring salespeople together. When I started the Enterprise Sales Forum, I did not have a big vision; it was just my way to convince salespeople and startup founders to meet and help each other. What started in a sweaty conference room for 50 people six years ago eventually blossomed into a community of 30,000 members across 24 chapters globally.
  • Community-in-a-Box is a how-to guide into building and scaling a community from the ground up or reinvigorating existing communities. From the experiences of the Enterprise Sales Forum and other communities I have launched, I weave those stories into a book that leads you past the minefields and mistakes so you can confidently launch and grow a healthy community.
  • Even though we all come to community building with our own motivations, the end result is a labor of love that positively impacts the lives of many. Through this book, you will also feel the impact of the power of community and what it takes to grab the spark and start a movement!
