• Coverage Area Selection through Geo Spatial visualization in PostGIS:
• Amazon Home Services allows customers to hire a local professional to tackle a wide range of jobs like housecleaning, repairs, fixes, lawn care, and maintenance. The merchants who offer the services are called the Service providers. They offer services in specific areas they choose, called the coverage area.
• In the earlier model of the coverage area selection process, they had to select a state and a region. The page would display a list of all ZIP codes in their region in the form of checkboxes where they can select and remove any zip code. This could not give them any idea of where the ZIP codes are located geographically and they needed to search them on some map to confirm. So it was difficult to relate zip codes in their area.
• This project aims at allowing them to choose the zip codes in a more interactive way. They provide us with a central ZIP code (which they are aware of) and a radius (in miles) up to which they want to offer their services or they can also draw a polygon (facilitated by the Nokia maps API) on the map to denote their region of interest. We show all the ZIP codes lying in that region on a map and allow users to select and remove whichever zip code they wish to by just clicking on it. The set of finally selected ZIP codes forms their coverage area.
• I used a PostgreSQL database to store the locations of ZIP area centroids and used the PostGIS extension which does geo-spatial visualization queries and can fetch points in any polygonal geometry or a circle with a single query line. Controllers for the queries and model views were built using Spring-MVC framework. Amazon security systems do not allow direct Nokia HERE Maps API calls from inside Amazon network to outside world. So, we followed the Infosec policy and put the maps in an Iframe, so that Amazon system does not get vulnerable to any Nokia HERE Maps API calls.
