Opentable

Chief Architect, Mobile Payments

Apr 2013May 2014 · 1 yr 1 mo

  • OpenTable is the leading portal for fine-dining restaurant reservations in the United States, Canada, the UK and other countries. In all, OpenTable serves over 30,000 restaurants worldwide. Chalo, which later became OpenTable Payments, was positioned as "Uber for Restaurants", an epithet on which we delivered, and then some.
  • As Chief Architect of the Payments product, I was responsible for the design, implementation and delivery of the mobile payments feature integrated with OpenTable's mobile application. The architecture had a mobile component, a cloud-based server-side component, and a desktop component. I own the patent filings for the overall design of the solution, and along with owning the architecture, I also contributed to the server side code, and personally led the team that contributed to the code that was installed at the restaurant's back-end system while being the largest contributor to the code-base. This required me to be intimately familiar with various esoteric POS systems, positioning me as one of the leading experts on POS integration for restaurants.
  • As part of the solution, I identified and integrated various technologies into the architecture, including Nginx, Redis, gUnicorn, PostGres, Stripe Connect(payments gateway), PubNub, etc. The system was a distributed, high-availability system designed to operate in low- or bad-connectivity environments, both on the LAN as well as the mobile fronts.

  • I worked as an intern at Infosys during the summer after my Junior Year at IIT Bombay. I developed a content management system for internal use at Infosys. Specific emphasis was laid on semantic tagging of content, and generation of graphs of related data/information within repositories containing gigabytes worth of documentation. A corresponding command line tool was developed in order to facilitate and demonstrate semantically leveraged searching.
