Senior supervision over the course of the programme was limited and within the department I had to oversee and improve two different separation methods to extract cyclohexane and provide training to another trainee on the safety, operation and data gathering of the separation procedures. Furthermore, I was delegated to analyse the hydrocarbon counterparts produced in liquid and vapour fractions through the use of a refractometer and gas chromatography. During the entire programme I had to communicate results and findings between departments and produce a report on the experiment overall.

• A part of a research group in the development of 4F peptide that mimics the anti-inflammatory properties of HDL (known as good cholesterol) which could then be ingested orally to reduce heart-related risks. Within the group I had to synthesise, purify and separate a sample of two different peptide molecules which would be used for further experimentation. The exposure allowed me to use the scientific principles that I have learnt and apply it into research for the evolution of new scientific ideas and solutions.

In this course I got an insight into renewable energy technologies and their applications in the local area. A group of students were split into 8 groups of 4 and we had to research and present work involving the use of prototype energy solutions in the English Channel.
