  • I joined TCL to re-built the Global Product Center (GPC) from scratch since June 2018. I was handling a Global Product Center (GPC) around 115 members, with 3 mobile brand product roadmap and strategy: TCL, Alcatel, and Blackberry.
  • My role was handling TCL smartphone product roadmap and consolidating many different functions together. It includes market research, business and product insights, product strategy, company vision of products, design with advanced technology development & implementation, design strategy & design language definition, User experience design, service design development, content & services strategy & design, product marketing, and brand strategy. I worked closely with marketing for building up the new global brand strategy:

  • (2) DISPLAY GREATNESS: Brand philosophy.

  • During 2012 to 2013 when I worked in Google, in order to internal compete with Google's HQ team's array camera technology, I led and worked with a camera expert company (Altek Corporation, https://www.altek.com.tw/) for the world's first dual-camera working module for smartphones and implemented into the whole Motorola MMSP product roadmap. It was implemented by hTC M8 in 2014. It's the originator of multi-camera smartphones.
  • 2012, May 20th: Google finished the MOTOROLA acquisition globally.
  • Until merged with Google in mid of 2012, there were around 50 ID + UI designers in my Beijing design center. 2011 to 2012, I inherited a contracted base UI team with 5 designers in Brazil for LATAM local carrier UI requirements and UI concept developments. 2011 to 2012, I extended a design team with 4 designers in Taipei, mainly for the design communication with ODM companies and concept development for Motorola MMCP products.
  • My team has been creating many excellent products, such as XT615 (MotoLux), Defy family products including DEFY II with IP67 waterproof function, XT319, EX226 and many feature phones in the worldwide market.
  • Within 2012, Motorola MMCP sold more than 13M units of mobile phones in global markets, and 2011 year sold around 15M units mobile phones in global markets. It contributed over 50% volume of Motorola (MMI) products globally. (MMCP extended to be a full-function team with 300 employees, including senior management team working with ODM partners around Asia to produce Motorola mobile phones)
  • 2011, Aug 15th: Google announced to Acquire Motorola Mobility.

My team created own design language (theme-based) for Motorola MMCP products and coordinated with most of JDM companies in Asia, such as Foxconn Taipei(Chi-Mei)/Nanjing, Arima Taipei/Nanjing, Cellon Beijing/Shenzhen, BYD mobile, Compal Communications Inc. (CCI), Qisda (BenQ), Gigabyte and Huawei. And as the UI resource needed, we contracted with China Wintone to have around 25 GUI designers in Beijing supporting GUI graphic execution for MotoSwitch UI. (Until merged with Google, MotoSwitch UI has developed to version 2.5)
  • ➢ Mainly design Motorola mobile phones which below $300 USD price range for the global market, including Android tablet, Android smartphone, an entry-level smartphone, social networking feature phone, entry-level feature phone. ID and UI designs are across 2G, 2.5G, CDMA, 3G products. The platforms of products are across from MTK, BMP, TI, ST-Ericsson, Intel, and QUALCOMM.
  • ➢ Within 2010, Motorola MMCP sold around 9M units mobile phone in global markets. (MMCP had about 150 employees, including full-function senior management team working with ODM partners around Asia to produce Motorola mobile phones).

  • ➢ Designed Moto V501, V181, C381, A732, L800t (YinTai), “Ming 2008” 3G concept phones. Especially the C381 was the most seller in Asia market during 2004-2005 due to the fresh and smart design was well accepted by teenage users.
  • ➢ A732 was the first slider phone of Motorola with finger writing function, fitting Chinese inputting usage; A732 gained 2005 IF China outstanding design award.
  • ➢ L800t (YinTai) was the first TD-SCDMA phone for China market. L800t with low-cost segment lighting technology, which gained Motorola 2008 utility and design patent.
  • ➢ The “Ming 2008” 3G concept was the first transparent flip touch PDA, it was expected to launch by end of 2008 (Project changed scope after I left).
  • ➢ During the period as the senior designer position in Motorola, I led many concept designs and real projects, executed design strategy, design language development, new technology, new material investigation and produced many concepts to productions, well understood Motorola design language from 2006-2009.

  • ➢ 2007 to 2010, I inherited the previous ALCATEL design team and extended to 2 design teams in Shanghai and Shenzhen including 30 designers. My team has extended more functions including industrial design, graphic user interface, appearance model management, 3D modeling and advance mechanical research teams. I handled Alcatel mobile phone design from 2008 – 2010, Total there were more than 30 mobile products launched in the global market successfully; it included 2 famous products OT-800 (Jade) and OT-708 (One-Touch MINI) and got very successful business in LATAM and Europe markets. Except for Alcatel own brand design, my team also designed for ODM business of many famous international 1st tier brands such as Vodafone, Orange, Yahoo, and Motorola.
  • ➢ 2008, the 2nd year of global economic crisis, TCL got the ODM business from Motorola through one of European carrier, I led my design team to design 12 Motorola WX series low tier phones working together with Moto CXD team. Sanjay Jha who was Motorola new CEO, he decided to consolidate all R&D resource to focus on the Android platform and stopped the rest of 5+ platforms. So at that time, there were only very few Motorola products available in the global market. The 12 WX products helped Motorola to go through the tough time and release the urgent of continued business losses in the global market.
  • ➢ 2005, TCL acquired ALCATEL brand in order to speed up the progress of internationalization. After 2 years to re-built global business and re-organization. I joined TCL to be creative design director in August 2007. I was in charge of ALCATEL mobile phone design.
  • 2009, ALCATEL sold around 16M units mobile phone in global markets.
  • 2010, ALCATEL sold around 36M units mobile phone in global markets.
  • 2011, ALCATEL sold around 43M units mobile phone in global markets.
