About

Dr. Awani Bhushan holds a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) (BHU) Varanasi, with over fifteen years of extensive research experience. Currently serving as an Assistant Professor in the School of Mechanical Engineering at Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT), Chennai campus. He also oversees the Dynamics of Machinery Laboratory as the Lab In-Charge. His doctoral research, under the guidance of Prof. S.K. Panda, focused on the reliability and size effect analysis of nuclear-grade graphite, a key material in next-generation nuclear reactors. He has a strong interdisciplinary background, with core expertise in Fracture Mechanics, Finite Element Method (FEM), Nuclear Engineering, and Stochastic Failure Analysis. His work extensively incorporates modelling, simulation, applied mathematics, and predictive statistical analysis. He has applied his technical expertise to a range of real-world problems, including industrial pipe failure analysis in collaboration with Toshiba and JSW, as well as fracture toughness evaluation of pipe materials under realistic service conditions. Additionally, he has contributed to defense-oriented research, particularly in the development of efficient fuel-oxidizer systems for solid rocket motors and missiles, where he explored the catalytic enhancement of ammonium perchlorate decomposition using reduced graphene oxide. His interdisciplinary collaborations extend into biomechanics and biomedical engineering, where he has supported stent design and bio-sensor development. He also has ongoing research interests in smart materials, bioenergy, and sustainable fuel systems. Research Interests: • Fracture Mechanics and Structural Integrity • Nuclear Engineering and Material Reliability • Finite Element Method (FEM) and Numerical Simulation • Pipe Failure Analysis and Industrial Case Studies • Engineering Optimization and Applied Statistics • Smart Materials and Structures • Biomechanics and Biomedical Device Engineering • Bioenergy, Biofuels, and Sustainable Propulsion Systems • Rocket Propulsion and Fuel-Oxidizer Development

  • Ph.D
  • October 2012—October 2015
  • Study of Weibull statistical design criterion on nuclear graphite component
  • Supervisor: Dr. S.K. Panda, IIT (BHU) Varanasi
  • 1. Estimation of size effect on the strength of actual components used in Next-generation nuclear reactor and lab-tested specimens.
  • 2. Performed Reliability and life estimation analysis of graphite specimens through WeibPar and CARES (NASA developed software),
  • 3. Implemented Finite Element Analysis (FEA) in the stress-dependent elastic problem to solve bimodular specimens. FEA was also used in size effect analysis on the strength of the materials.
  • 4. Examined the effects of bimodularity on the fracture criterion with the help of different type of the specimens namely rectangular, cylindrical beams made of nuclear grade graphite.
