• As Senior Principal for industrial automation in our Amazon Fulfillment Centers worldwide. I lead an engineering team of Principal Engineers tackling the most challenging automation problems across Robotics. I designed Amazon’s Tote Automated Storage and Retrieval System to manage inventory in totes throughout the entire Amazon Fulfillment Network and launched a field alpha in 2020. I created the next-gen Automation Infrastructure strategy and re-architecture of our fulfillment network for the seamless integration and smooth operations of industrial automation into new and existing facilities. These are two of the most significant changes in fulfillment technology at Amazon in the last two decades

• I was the Chief of Staff for the Alexa Engine (the Alexa speech operating system) tasked to deliver the ubiquitous and scalable Alexa voice service worldwide in support of Amazon’s family of Echo devices, third party usage, and all applications of the voice activated technology. I prepared, managed and presented all aspects of our development and operations to the leadership including Amazon Senior Vice Presidents.
• I created Alexa’s automated data-driven approach for monitoring key performance improvement metrics across the organization to increase product quality (e.g. reduce false-wakes, increase feature adoption, or decrease abandonment). I drove development decisions such as attribute rationalization to simplify WW growth and Ops.

• I was lead principal for the Prime Air drone delivery engineering program. Delivered the first vehicles and systems capable to begin limited deliveries in Cambridge, UK. Developed the technology and transformed the program from incubation into one capable of engineering systems and vehicle fleets in preparation to begin service.
• I owned the Prime Air drone delivery engineering roadmap, deliverables, S-Team (SVP) goals, and execution. I was responsible for the technical decisions that drove organizational activities during the first two years. I managed expectations, reported progress against goals, and prepared/presented at all Prime Air executive briefings.

• I defined and proved the architectural changes required to regionalize Amazon’s Platform Service Architecture to support multi-tenant country marketplaces on a single code stack configurable for multiple currencies and time zones, a change directly responsible for Amazon’s rapid international Retail/Digital expansion including “push-button” Kindle stores, Amazon Fresh, Prime Now, and Flex.
• I defined the architectural changes, owned the technical roadmap and drove the implementation of the designs to decouple the e-Commerce platform’s payment service that made the “Amazon Pay” product possible. It offers merchants simple APIs to integrate with Amazon’s global, retail-scale payment service and its millions of customers.

• I invented Amazon’s Relational Database Service (RDS), the patented AWS offering was the world’s first relational database service. I managed its development with 17 developers and testers. I managed all business unit and cross-functional relationships.
• Amazon RDS allows developers and businesses to easily and cost-effectively store, process and query relational data sets in the cloud that are durable and scalable. Users easily manage their database instances with a lightweight web-service control plane while accessing data through a familiar and fully functional Query Processor (QP) in the data tier. I delivered value-added capabilities such as highly available synchronous block replication and scalable read replicas.

• I was responsible for delivering on significant improvements in the Microsoft Search Core Static Rank components for what has become the Bing™ search engine. I mined and analyzed data, defined requirements, and drove execution of the core technology of Microsoft’s Web Search experience. I managed the growth of the ranking index from 5B to 20B documents.
• I developed Query Classification to mine searchers intent and wrote a think-week paper on the topic. Think-week was a retreat where Bill Gates read juried papers from Microsoft employees.

• I conceived of, prototyped, patented, championed, and managed development of the Active Directory (AD) based peer-to-peer enterprise routing architecture of Exchange 2007. During development I managed the Transport Layers move to the .NET CLR managed framework. Developed the Intranet-to-DMZ Synchronization of Exchange 2007’s configuration to a boundary server.
• I conceived of and drove the technical partnerships responsible for the publication of Microsoft’s ActiveSync protocol now adopted by every major wireless carrier for SyncAgent development – the technology that enables one’s iPhone to sync directly to Exchange.
• I investigated the options that would enable Outlook and Exchange to work over GPRS. I concluded the best option was RPC over HTTP, code named AirMAPI, and championed to deliver the feature in Windows 2003 SP1. I then delivered the value proposition that enabled the Outlook Microsoft Mail client and the Exchange 2003 Server to work well over low bandwidth connections such as GPRS and 56K as well as high-bandwidth connections.
• I developed the patented SmartMail capability with Microsoft Distinguished Engineer Mark Lucovsky.

• I architected the patented SmartHub™, a web-based exchange where buyers could manage suppliers and inventory over the Internet for Just-In-Time (JIT) manufacturing. I managed a team of 15 to develop the flagship product in Java/J2EE, WebLogic AppServer, and Oracle Database. SmartHub™ manages thousands of suppliers conducting hundreds of thousands of transactions daily.

• I designed the patented architecture for the HD11 ultrasound device and managed the engineering team during its development. An MS Windows embedded controller manages a dedicated multi-processor imaging pipeline. I earned several engineering excellence awards for architecture and development methodologies in advancing the state of the art in ultrasound software. The core architecture continues to be used in all Philips state of the art Ultrasound products.
• I developed the patented ColorFlow™ Doppler imaging cardiology protocol for the HDI 5000/5500 devices.

Mar 1989 – Jul 1996 · 7 yrs 4 mos · Bellevue

• I designed and managed development of Easy5™ for simulating large dynamic systems. Integrated with major CAD packages, Easy5™ was originally built for aerospace applications but has been sold to companies’ worldwide to simulate the controls and hydraulics of automobiles, trains, space vehicles, earthmoving equipment, and amusement park rides. No longer owned by Boeing, Easy5™ is sold by MacNeal-Schwendler Corporation (MSC) and continues to provide value worldwide.
• I designed and developed computational fluid dynamic systems for simulating fluid flows for aerofoil and nozzle design. It enabled aerospace engineers to understand the mechanics of their designs before proceeding with physical constructions or conducting empirical studies such as wind tunnel tests.
• I was lead engineer for the design and implementation of a simulator for lightning transient analysis used to design grounding and shielding to protect the on-board electronics in commercial jets from mid-air lightning strikes. Written in C/X-Windows, it has been used to certify every new Boeing airplane program starting with the B757/B767 to present day.

• I designed and managed development of several key products for modeling and analyzing the Earth’s substructure used by every major petroleum company for Oil and Gas exploration including SierraSeis™, Raymap™, Mimic™, and Slipr™. These products continue to be marketed by Halliburton who acquired Sierra Geophysics.
• I was responsible for the graphics and display toolkits used to support every Sierra product. Written in C and GKS to capitalize on terminal characteristics to provide windowing features for large mainframes connected to graphics terminals.

• As senior engineer I authored the Command Generator and Momentum Management components for the Hubble Space Telescopes on-board command and control software. Command Generator accepts instructions to move the vehicle and generates signals for the onboard flywheels to increase rotational velocity to introduce torque. Momentum Manager accepts instructions to slow the Hubble by creating a magnetic field in the magnetic torquer bars that interact with the Earth’s magnetic field to dump momentum out of the vehicle.
• I wrote the support system that loaded verification and validation tests, executed them, and generated the reports including 110 plots illustrating the results of the vehicles anticipated flight dynamics
