• I founded and led engineering for Azure Sphere. Azure Sphere and our silicon partners provide the best end-to-end solution for creating secured IoT devices. Created a startup business with Microsoft--Secured Series A, Series B, and Series C funding and then managed through acquisition into Azure's mainstream OS product group. Grew team from 1 to over 100 employees. Fostered an inclusive and diverse team culture founded on an aspired-to culture values of fearlessness, kindness, and trustworthiness, grounded in growth mindset.

• Recruited researchers and engineers to build the MSR Operating Systems research group. Co-lead two of the largest cross-group research projects in MSR’s history: the Menlo and Singularity projects. Menlo combined OS, UX, and applications research to explore the future of computing when mobiles becomes users primary PCs. Singularity combined language, tools, and OS research to determine how to build more reliable systems and built a new OS from scratch in managed code. Managed cross-division relationships with product groups and relationships with key hardware partners, negotiated production of custom phone prototypes, designed and implemented major kernel and OS components, implemented runtime and compiler features, and wrote code for demos. Mentored for 7 interns directly and another dozen through reports or project. Served as editor & Technical Auditor for 4 protocols in the Microsoft Work Group Server Protocol Program (WSPP), MS-DFSC, MS-DFSN, MS-VDS, MS-WMI.

• Authored architectural specifications for Version 2.0 of the Windows Automated Deployment Services. Version 2.0 architecture added network infrastructure management and automated server allocation to the 1-to-many server scripting provided by Version 1.0.

• Lead group of eleven Program Managers with responsibilities for designing and shipping Windows Automated Deployment Services Version 1.0 and the Server Appliance Kit Version 3.0. My group created two of the core technologies for Microsoft's Dynamic Systems Initiative, the Dynamic Data Center and the System Definition Model. End-of-life’d the Server Appliance Kit after shipping Version 3.0.

• Founding researcher of project to automate the management of large-scale datacenters, called BIG. Co-authored internal technical report surveying 17 of Microsoft’s internet properties and their technical and operations challenges. One of 6 member team proposing a framework for automating the operation of commercial data centers. Worked on various projects including Continuum, a distributed version of the .NET Framework; running DCOM over System Area Networks (SANs); the Detours package for instrumenting Windows binaries; and a proxy device driver for creating Windows NT user-mode drivers. Mentored two graduate student interns.

• Developed the first prototype of the network protocol and client software and for what eventually became Windows Media Player and Microsoft’s Advanced Streaming Format (ASF). Work resulted in U.S. Patent #6,101,546.
