Partner & Contributor - M19 Initiative (Community Volunteer)

Apr 2019Jun 2019 · 2 mos · India

  • When the COVID-19 crisis hit India at full-scale in March-April 2019, the medical infrastructure and hospitals in India were unable to quickly scale up the existing production and distributions channels and cater to the sudden spike in demand of PPEs (Personal Protective Equipment) required for healthcare practitioners. During this time, the maker community in India rallied together and collaborated to carry out distributed manufacturing of Face Shields across 42 cities, towns and villages in India and bridging the supply-demand gap of protective equipment locally. The idea behind M19 initiative was to locally produce (with locally available and procured raw materials) and distribute Face Shields in the same city, town or village where there was need for same and thus entirely bypassing the distribution problem that would have otherwise arrived in attempting to manufacture the shields in one location and then attempting to distribute it across the country.
  • The M19 Initiative was one of the largest distributed manufacturing feats in the world and as a collective effort we were able to manufacture and distribute more than 1 million face shields across the country in just 49 days. There is a formal research being carried out in academia by Cambridge University on how the M19 Initiative scaled up from 1 face shield prototype to 1 million medical-grade face shields. M19 Initiative has been recognized and appreciated by various public forums, news outlets, TEDx communities, UNESCO (New Delhi Office) and many more reputed institutions. There have been multiple studies published on M19 Initiative and can be read about in details in the links shared below.

  • Pediatric Perimeter is a novel, first of its kind device to measure the side vision of infants. The procedure of quantifying visual field is called perimetry. This device is used on children with potential disease to cause a visual field defect such as glaucoma, retinitis pigmentosa, Retinopathy of Prematurity, etc. It involves checking the eye/head movement of an infant to a visual stimulus in particular areas in the visual field using various tests in perimetry involving LEDs fitted inside the Pediatric Perimeter. Currently, the clinician has to acknowledge the reaction from the children during testing inside a Pediatric perimeter. Doing it manually leads to error in the reaction time calculation. Automating this process would help in reducing this human error and help in getting more accurate readings.
  • Developed a Segmentation algorithm to track gaze of babies in real-time using Viola-Jones Face Detection algorithm and Fast Radial Symmetry Transform.

  • Developed a prototype of Hydro-Pro, a device used to measure the extent of Hydrophobic behavior of a prosthetic eye by measuring contact angle between a stained droplet of water and the prosthetic eye surface. The quantification of Hydrophobic behavior of a prosthetic eye helps in its maintenance by ensuring that after inserting inside a human eye socket lipids don't accumulate over the surface of prosthetic eye and hence avoid irritation.
