• Working on payments platform (UPI), Unified Payment Interface!
• I don’t think so you must have used anything else more often than UPI for transactions.
• Unified Payment Interface is the biggest source of payments in our country.
• 1. UPI or Unified Payment Interface is a real-time payment system developed by the National Payment Corporation of India facilitation P2P and P2M transactions.
• 2. UPI transactions can be done using Virtual Payment Address, where the psp-handle is an NPCI specified handle for the PSP(Payment Service Providers).
• 3. UPI is supported by 2-factor authentication. One is the authentication provided by the PSPs which are generally in the form of screen locks or PIN. The second is the pin that you use to finally do a UPI transaction.
• 4. When you make a payment, your details and the payee's VPA is sent from your phone to the PSPs. PSPs are generally banks. As you would have seen, most of the VPAs are of the form something@bank. The third-party apps establish a contract with the banks to provide you with VPAs.
• 5. When the PSP receives the above information, it sends the details to UPI which is managed by NPCI. The NPCI calls the desired payee's PSP which it discovers using its VPA to get the payee account details and then instructs the PSP of the payee to credit the amount in the bank account of the payee. After crediting, it sends back a successful response, which is sent back to the sender PSP and you see a successful message on your mobile.
• 6. As you can notice, no actual money transfer happens in this process. The actual money transfer only happens between the underlying banks which is done offline.
• 7. What happens when your transaction fails? There can be many points of failure. It can be your PSP, the UPI itself, or the payee's PSP. In any case, as there is no money transfer happening, even if you see debit in your account, the amount is reversed, when actual money settling happens between the banks.
