Soumya Mishra — SRE (Site Reliability Engineer)
My passion for building stuff started back in my school days. I was not a great student. I just had a knack for making things and doing crazy experiments. Have you ever plugged the insides of a DC motor directly to the wall outlet expecting it would become an antenna that lets you contact aliens? No? You were smart, I bet. Huge thanks to my parents for letting me take part in science fairs and bearing my crazy experiments at home. I believe they are responsible for my maker spirit. Apart from this, nothing is interesting in my early school days. So let us move ahead in time to my late high school period. School life was nearing an end, and it was time to decide what I want to do in life. Like most middle-class Indians, I had two choices, engineering or medicine. Parents were hoping to make me a doctor. I wanted to make my supercar brand someday. Mechanical engineering seemed like the right choice. Fast forward, straight to the end of engineering school, bad grades (as usual), and no job at hand. I had only two achievements from college life that I am proud of: I found a gang of friends to die for and helped build an off-road buggy that took part in BAJA SAE off-road ATV competition. The college was over. Most of my friends had already received offers from software corporates. I was the only one left with no job and a determination to never taking a software engineering job. I spent the next year doing many things, studying to prepare for higher studies, daydreaming about opening a custom motorcycle business, trying to help my juniors with their BAJA SAE preparation, and many long internet browsing sessions. During one such internet browsing session, I discovered FreeCodeCamp. I tried a few programming lessons and picked up HTML and CSS. While I was making stuff on a computer now, it was nothing new, many of the same principles apply to the computer world as it applies to the mechanical world. Soon I was JavaScript literate and could piece together a working web application. I landed my first job at Rofr.in, which gave me the experience needed in building real-world applications. After Rofr, I started freelancing. Over the last couple of years, I have worked with multiple teams across India and abroad, all very passionate and all trying to solve real problems faced by real people. It has been 5 years now since I have been part of Goldcast, where I switched multiple roles and handled multiple projects.
