  • Great usecase of driving business transformation using data and technology.
  • Stylo Bug Enterprises, incorporated in 2016 is an online only fashion brand dealing in kids clothing. Currently it is listed on Myntra, Amazon and other marketplaces. Their strength is in designing and doing in-house manufacturing with great quality.
  • Like any other fashion business, reducing inventory was the key. Conceptualised and helped execute a product which via data would generate insights on quantity of each design that should be manufactured, thereby reducing inventory. Introduced data collection within the factory to optimise (increase speed, trackability, reduce wastage) manufacturing unit. This coupled with backward integrated supply chain led them to do record business in the EORS sales on Myntra in 2019. The company became Top 10 seller in its category on Myntra within a year. Its peak orders (for a day/week) were 100 X of last year's. Mindboggling scale. Never heard of!!
  • The Myntra team acknowledged this and icing on the cake was that all of this was achieved with 1/5 of the resources (designs/styles) of the leading sellers. Proud of investing and be associated with this business.
  • While the founders are a passionate bunch and full credit to them for execution, this association proves one of my hypothesis. Engineers armed with business knowledge are lethal assets. Elated to discover this side of mine. Some boastful story this is!!

Vice President of Engineering

  • Currently education sector is a mess. Teachers/principals arguably don't want change in teaching methodologies since their work-load is high, parents want something cost effective. Students sadly don't have any decision making and everyone makes it for them.
  • I believe it is time to make an impact in this sector, one school at a time with over 200 million school going students and 300,000 private schools
  • Designed/architected all the (front end and back end) products to cater to below business needs
  • Communication:
  • o Personalized news feed on the wall.
  • o Attendance.
  • Learning:
  • o Quizzes based on your class-subject-chapter-topics as per NCERT and CBSE guidelines.
  • o Content (pdf/doc/html/videos) relevant to the student.
  • Ecommerce suited for schools
  • o Books Marketplace.
  • o Fee Payment systems.
  • Micro services architecture with components handling upto 2000 rpm - 4000 rpm.
  • Responsible for IT budget.
  • Lots of exciting inhouse innovations.
  • o Devops automations: CI/CD with Ansible and Jenkins, 1 Click Environment automation and more.
  • o Few automations (on monitoring usage of environments) reduced 20-30% of cost on AWS infra.
  • o Team structure: Mix of inhouse, in-sourcing, out-sourcing team to fulfill business mandate of a profitable tech startup.
  • o Innovative release process: Concept of release owner introduced who takes all big/small decisions in a release.
  • o Mix of horizontal and vertical teams ensures high productivity.
  • Technology: Java, PHP 7, Angular, Android, Objective C, Aerospike, Kafka, Mysql.
  • If this excites you, come once and talk to us about the product that we are building. Its a suite of product that would become the Academic OS.

Snapdeal

2 roles

Director of Engineering for Mobile

Apr 2015Apr 2016 · 1 yr · New Delhi Area, India

  • Working for Snapdeal. Have been helping Snapdeal execute the mobile strategy from technology perspective for last 2-3 years.
  • Last one year was phenomenal for mobile apps team, having built lots of products with small team and with amazing benefits. Now team has grown 8-10 fold. We need to find way to execute right things, execute still faster and keep innovating (some really cool things are on cards).
  • Mobile API aggregator (first system that mobile apps would hit): Handled a scale of 5,00,000 concurrent users at peak diwali traffic with ms response times. Incredible journey. API layer was scaled (2X-10X), made fault tolerant, secured and whole lot of other initiatives to make the system robust. Monitoring and alerting and other aspect too were strengthened.
  • Mobile apps (iOS, Android, Windows): Single owner throughout Snapdeal journey since its inception.
  • Launched SD Push, new age notification platform which targets to send notifications to entire Snapdeal user base in mere 15-20 mins!! It has been created from scratch, allows you to segment based on several axes of user activity (time of visit, no. of visits, category, product, orders etc). This would now be integrated in other "pearl" apps. ACHIEVEMENTS:
  • Achievements that we as a team accomplished in this short duration:
  • Android, iOS, Windows and iPad apps were featured on the respective app stores with 4.1+ Rating
  • iOS and iPad app reached 1st position on app store; best material design implementation in India
  • Golden Peacock Award for most innovative product (Application Referral) among 300 entries.
  • While bulk push systems achieved 1-2% conversions, SD push notification system achieved as high as 4-5% conversion rate.
  • In the ecommerce journey, scaled the API product 100X (or may be more) and team upto 20X. Managed teams from 5 member teams to 120 member teams.

Senior Engineering Manager

Nov 2011Mar 2015 · 3 yrs 4 mos · New Delhi Area, India

  • Joined Snapdeal in its early days when it was still doing deals.
  • 1) As early member of dev team, enhanced website a bit helping with Marketing tools. Developed various SEO tools and other marketing initiatives for the website. Reworked retargeting, analytic scripts which make the pages heavy and cluttered. Improved the performance. Later Managed a team which was responsible for managing the buy experience on the site i.e. right when you add a product to cart, place an order to thank you page.
  • 2) Set up teams who initially developed mobile site from scratch. WAP site was launched in early 2012. Worked with team of 10 devs to launch various features, trying to bring parity to website features. Conversion increased from 0.5% in early days to 5.5%. Scaled and launched various design iterations with merchandise and tight quality controls.
  • 3) The same team put together order management functions (backend service to add to cart, place an order, cancel an order, return an order) together from scratch.
  • 4) Set up team to launch mobile apps in early 2012 when no one even thought of it. Due to low traction, put it on maintenance mode for a while. The team got disbanded and then later built another team to take up mobile apps as they exist today. Talk about an intrapreneur's journey!!
  • 5) Briefly looked at Search functions, catalog management functions in very small capacity.
  • Very proud to have built, hacked and crashed various systems at Snapdeal.
