The two core values closest to my heart are discipline and self-improvement. First one stems from the belief that consistency beats talent, luck, good intentions and even any quality. My obsession with self-improvement is the reason why I am interested in Machine Learning(ML). While learning from our mistakes comes naturally to us, it is hard to program machines to do so. ML presents a framework for machines to reflect and improve behaviour without any explicit programming. ML is a broad field, but I am specifically interested in using its potential to make an impact on people's lives. Applying ML in real life brings a whole new paradigm of issues such as: 1. If machines are only able to learn by trial and error, how can we use them in critical domains? One such instance could be healthcare, where every mistake is expensive. Working on this problem I designed an algorithm where the machine can learn good behaviour policies just by observing past data from humans. 2. We often believe that decision making processes with machines should be more unbiased compared to their human counterpart. Recent research shows that machines can discriminate against particular demographics. As of now, I am working with Prof. Przemyslaw Grabowicz on the topic of machine learning fairness. 3. As machines get more self-reliant one natural question that arises is how can we use them to improve our quality of life. Working with Microsoft I have designed algorithms to help people with limited mobility to play games using Reinforcement Learning.
