Too much to tell you

MY PREVIOUS LIFE AS A NON-ENTREPRENEUR

  • Before I became "the LinkedIn guy," I was the guy sitting in pointless meetings wondering why no one asked "but why are we doing this?"
  • I spent years in sales roles at Adecco, Yacht, Pragmatics, and Odysee—staffing firms and training institutions where I learned two things:
  • (1) I couldn't sell anything I didn't believe in, making me terrible at "Always Be Closing," and
  • (2) I was better at teaching colleagues how to sell than doing it myself.
  • Authenticity beats scripts.
  • Relationships beat quota-chasing.
  • Trust beats pressure.
  • Then, at 30, I hit a wall.
  • Great salary. Lease car. Career path. Zero happiness.
  • So I did what any rational person would do: applied for a volunteer role in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, working for a local NGO on €60 per month. I learned Swahili, connected with locals, and felt more alive than I had in years.
  • Because I spoke Swahili, a former colleague asked me to translate when buying a diving school in Zanzibar. Tanzanian law required two foreigners to co-own businesses, so there I was—co-owner of a diving school. I never got my PADI (oops), but spent 18 months snorkeling with dolphins, turtles, and locals who thought I was insane for leaving a "good European job."
  • The LinkedIn twist:
  • A sales trainer once said, "Be aware of this platform called LinkedIn—it's gonna be big." I created an account, invited people, got accused of spam, and closed it in embarrassment.
  • Years later in Tanzania, knowing my NGO work was ending, I reopened LinkedIn. That decision landed me my next job and changed everything.
  • The lesson:
  • Sometimes the best career move is quitting your career.
  • Sometimes teaching beats doing.
  • Sometimes the platform everyone thinks is spam becomes your life's work.
  • In 2010, I stopped exchanging time for money and started Just Connecting.
