About

A passionate, experienced Android Engineering Lead, currently working as a Senior Developer Relations Engineer at Google in London. I'm currently focused on Jetpack Compose as the Tech lead for Compose Core DevRel. I've been developing apps professionally since 2012. My current role is a blend between engineering, product management and research where my responsibilities involve working with Engineers to build out great APIs for developers to use. Prior to Google, I was the Lead Android Engineer at GoDaddy Studio, where I worked for 4 years. I strive to build high quality android apps which shows with my latest work at GoDaddy Studio (formerly Over), where the app was featured on Google Play in the Early Access category and the New and Updated category. It had an average rating of 4.6 and over 1 million downloads at the time of my departure. I'm a caring and considerate leader, taking into account others opinions and setting technical direction. I worked on a wide range of apps from companies such as DStv, Over, Discovery Vitality, Momentum, Netstar and Tracker. I graduated cum laude from the University of Johannesburg in 2012 with a BSc Honours degree in Information Technology. In March 2016, I was awarded the status of Google Developer Expert for Android. I enjoy public speaking and frequently speak at conferences and local meetups, I've spoken in many different countries around the world including: Kenya, Ukraine, Poland, Switzerland, United States (New York and Atlanta), Italy and in South Africa on many different topics from "Paving the path to becoming a better Android Developer" to "Practical Image Processing on Android". I've given over 50 presentations in the past few years. My blog has been featured multiple times in Android Weekly for its content on Android development with over 60+ articles on different development topics. In June 2016, I was selected as part of the Mail & Guardian’s Top 200 Young South Africans. I was an organiser of the local Google Developer Group for Johannesburg which ran monthly meetups on Google related technology such as Firebase, Android, Chrome, Angular etc. Since starting the meetup in January 2017, I helped grow the community to over 2000 members on meetup by running over 20 events. I am a passionate, hard-working individual who loves a challenge. I like mentoring younger developers and sharing my knowledge with those around me, and ensuring my team is performing at their best.

  • Currently coding in Kotlin with RxJava, MVI (Mobius) and MVVM, Architecture Components, Dagger.
  • The Over Android app was featured in the "Early Access" Category on Google in the beginning of November 2018. The Over Android App featured on Google Play in the "New and Updated" category on 30 November 2018 after launching on the 26th of November.

  • In October 2019, Over won the award for the Best Consumer Solution at the MTN App of the Year awards hosted in Johannesburg, South Africa.
  • Some of my personal achievements at Over include: building out the graphics picker, the font picker and the initial template feed in the application. I was also heavily involved in building the persistence process of the designs to disk and the way in which the design templates are created and stored. I've also contributed to building out some of the complex Canvas tools - such as image effects (vignette, sharpen filters) using practical image processing techniques such as Renderscript and ColorFilters, the color picker tools and font adjustments such as kerning and line height tools. Working with OpenGL (migrating our render pipeline to use this), working with MediaCodec APIs to deliver the latest video feature.
  • My biggest achievement to date is the completion of the Mask Tool, that allows you to erase parts of a layer with your finger (allowing you to extract backgrounds, erase bits of text etc). This was particularly challenging but very rewarding.
  • The company was acquired in February 2020 by GoDaddy.
