About

I design and build tools that solve real-world problems, with a strong focus on systems, usability, and long-term impact. Right now, I'm building a platform to help students thrive, part of a broader effort to nudge education in a better direction. On weekends, I become a security sleuth. Over the years, I’ve helped uncover critical vulnerabilities in widely used software and devices: including those used by the United Nations, Dutch and Indian governments, working with teams behind Canon, Firefox, NodeJS, Samsung, LG, Motorola, and more. I contribute to open-source projects that help shape how technology is built, used and how it could work better. Some of that code has ended up in places like Microsoft, NASA, and Google. I follow a simple loop: build things, break them, learn, repeat. I’ve had the chance to speak at security conferences and workshops, where I’ve shared lessons from breaking (and fixing) things. Over the web, I share my thoughts, opinions, and anecdotes under the names '0x48piraj' or sometimes ‘piyushella’ depending on the day.

  • I had the unique opportunity as a freshman to design and take on a tailored role as a Security Penetration Tester and Auditor. This position was created specifically for me after I identified and reported several critical vulnerabilities to the dean, who then personally invited me to contribute to the university’s cybersecurity efforts.
  • In collaboration with Deloitte, our annual security audit vendor, I conducted primary security assessments for university systems and applications. My role involved performing penetration tests, identifying and mitigating security risks, and working closely with faculty members to enhance and secure in-house university portals and applications.
  • Key Contributions:
  • Spearheaded security audits of critical university infrastructure.
  • Identified and reported multiple vulnerabilities, leading to immediate improvements.
  • Collaborated with professors and departments to strengthen in-house applications.
  • Worked alongside Deloitte to ensure comprehensive annual security assessments.
  • This experience helped me develop a deep understanding of security testing, vulnerability management, and collaborative problem-solving, setting the foundation for my future in cybersecurity.
