Romita Saluja — Head of Design
Hey, there! I write longform investigations, narrative nonfiction, features and essays that often explore themes of gender, health, development, labour, human rights, and the environment. My work has appeared in publications around the world: Himal Southasian, The Guardian, Foreign Policy, The Washington Post, Undark Magazine, Missing Perspectives, Scroll, South China Morning Post, BBC, Al Jazeera, Scroll, and others. Most of it is supported by fellowships and grants. I was a 2025 Chevening South Asia Journalism fellow at the University of Westminster in London. Previously, I have been a fellow with the Population Reference Bureau (in 2021 and 2022), One World Media Fellow (2021), Maynard Institute for Journalism Education (2022,) and Journalism Centre on Global Trafficking (2023). I have also received grants from the International Women's Media Foundation, Thomson Reuters Foundation, and the International Center for Journalists. And while awards are not necessarily an indicator of excellence, I have won some: In 2024, my investigation into India's mining industry, published with The Guardian Long Read, won Save the Children's Global Media Award. I was also on the longlist for One World Media's Journalist of the Year Award 2025 for my work on labour abuses in the industry. In 2023, my longform piece about pelvic organ prolapse in the Himalayan villages of India got an Honorable Mention at the Katherine Schneider Journalism Awards for Excellence in Reporting on Disability (US), and was on the longlist for the One World Media Awards (UK). Previously, I have won two Orange Flower awards in creative writing, and travel writing categories. I was also honoured with the Excellence in Journalism award at India's GD Goenka University in 2021. I love my work-- and owls, trees, long walks, gardening, studying psychology, and designing clothes. Maybe I'll make podcasts someday! Say hi/work with me: romitasaluja@gmail.com.
