About

I have spent my life where risk, endurance, machine and leadership meet, extracting the utmost from team members and machines. As a naval aviator and circumnavigator, I have learned to build resilience and demonstrate it. In 2013, I became the first Indian and one of only 79 people ever to complete a solo nonstop unassisted circumnavigation of the Earth, sailing 23,000 nautical miles in 151 days. Alone at sea with no external assistance, no cheering crowds and nothing but my own skills to survive, I learned that discipline, preparation, and courage can overcome the impossible. Five years later, during the Golden Globe Race, a powerful storm in the Southern Ocean broke my boat and fractured my spine leaving me nearly paralyzed. Rescue seemed unlikely. Yet I survived, recovered fully, and returned to the ocean. In 2022, I completed the same race again and finished second, becoming the only Asian skipper to achieve a podium finish in a round the world race and one of fewer than 20 people on Earth to have sailed around the planet solo and nonstop more than once. And I did that with titanium rods fuzing five vertebrae. With over 100,000 nautical miles behind me, 500 days alone at sea and two decades in the Indian Navy, I have earned nicknames like Titanium Tomy, McGvyer of the Seas, Toughest Indian, etc, and a clear ability to translate leadership lessons into lessons in boardrooms. Both demand clarity, courage and composure under uncertainty and chaos. Today, as a global keynote speaker, leadership strategist, and motivational storyteller, I help organizations and teams navigate uncertainty, build resilience, and perform under pressure. My talks focus on decision making, crisis leadership, and human endurance.

Global

Skipper – Golden Globe Race 2022

Jan 2021Sep 2023 · 2 yrs 8 mos · On-site

  • In 2022, Abhilash Tomy returned to the Golden Globe Race, one of the toughest endurance challenges on Earth, a solo and nonstop circumnavigation of the globe without modern navigation or satellite assistance.
  • It was his second attempt. During the 2018 edition, a violent storm in the Southern Ocean dismasted his boat and fractured his spine, leaving him immobile and requiring surgical implants. What could have ended his sailing career became a new beginning. Determined to finish what he had started, Abhilash committed to a full recovery with a single goal: to return to the race that had almost claimed his life.
  • Four years later, he crossed the same oceans again and made history as the first Asian to secure a podium finish in the Golden Globe Race. Navigating only with a sextant, paper charts, and intuition, he completed one of the most demanding voyages ever attempted.
  • The campaign was not only a personal triumph but also a study in resilience, leadership, and decision making under pressure. It generated significant earned media value and global visibility for sponsors who shared in the mission and its message of perseverance.
  • Today, Abhilash shares lessons from this extraordinary journey with audiences and organizations around the world, showing that the principles of courage, adaptability, and endurance apply as much in boardrooms as they do on the high seas.
