  • A business person comes up with an idea to make money, or increase marketshare. This idea is handed to a person who writes specifications for the website. I take the spec from the person who writes specs. I then implement the spec in a large C++ code base (1.5 million lines). After a year and a half of this, I realize that 100 other people are doing the same thing, and each one makes the other's job that much harder. I feel pain of large scale software development.

  • Developing optimizations for a Proof-Carrying-Code compiler. The compiler reads Java classfiles, and does ahead-of-time compilation to native x86 instructions. The compiler itself is written in O'Caml.
  • Proof-carrying-code allows a recipient of a program compiled by this compiler to know that it meets all the safety checks guaranteed by the JVM specification, even though it's already been compiled to x86. Optimization phases were the standard ones documented in Muchnik, but required some tweaks to keep invariant information correct in the intermediate representation for proof generation.
