• This was probably the biggest highlight of my time at Optus: I helped establish the Optus "Express & Web Solutions Team". Our goal here was to build an internal software development team that would rapidly deliver web-based solutions to internal customers. Establishing this team involved:
• Establishing new processes across the organisation
• Gaining CIO and CEO buy-in to our proposed business model
• Internal marketing of our new service
• Practically, this felt like walking up an escalator moving in the opposite direction to you. But we got there!
• Once the team was established I was performing a generalist role. From requirements to development and then supporting our applications to production. Some tech and project highlights:
• PHP Development - Symfony Framework, MySQL and Oracle
• Java Development with Jboss Seam
• Drove the Optus Wiki from 300 to 5,000 users driving company-wide open collaboration
• Deployed and setup internal blogs for management and employees
• Worked on enterprise collaboration strategy and tools
• Kicked off Optus' use of social media for customer service
• All round web geek

• I joined the Corporate & Web Systems Team which was responsible for a lot of the internal and external web properties at Optus.
• During this time as a solution designer I:
• Spent a lot of time building minor enhancements to a wide range of web applications. Everything from core Java to Oracle stored procedures, perl scripting and random bits of Javascript.
• Learnt a lot about the Weblogic application server. Supporting and maintaining a lot of systems running on that platform.
• Performed a mix of development and production support.

Nov 2003 – Jan 2005 · 1 yr 2 mos

• I joined the Business Intelligence and Data Warehouse Team at one of Australia's largest telcos. Other than learn what it means to work at an "enterprise", I:
• Worked myself out of a job (two times) by building automated solutions which enabled our internal customers to self-serve.
• Worked on a lot of big data before the phrase "big data" was cool.
• Heavy SQL wrangling.
• Built small web apps on PHP and MySQL to service internal customers (track call records, bill disputes, bill reconciliation etc...)
• Application support and monitoring of web-based apps.

• One of the first few employees of 4mation Technologies during the startup phase of this company. This was pretty exciting times! Built custom web applications and websites for clients. Generalist. Met with clients, gathered requirements, wrote proposals and coded solutions. Highlights include developing and designing the Sydney Roosters & South Sydney Rugby League club websites.
• During this time we built a custom CMS which empowered a lot of our clients to self-serve where possible (bare in mind this was before every man and his dog had their own CMS).
• Things I played with every day: PHP, MySQL, Unix, JavaScript, CSS, Photoshop, Flash, ASP, PostgreSQL and lots and lots of coffee.

• Designed, built and maintained the website and corporate intranet for Insight Technologies in Sydney.
