I am a computer scientist, researcher, inventor and innovator with a deep expertise in designing, developing and industrializing robust, reliable and scalable machine learning systems to support our world’s most pressing engineering and scientific challenges. For more than a decade at Cisco, I designed, built and shipped industrial-grade machine learning systems and products for the largest companies in the world. Today, my research group supports Swiss-based startups, companies and organizations in their quest of innovation and increasing our resilience to systemic threats such as natural dangers, energy transition, climate change, and cybercrime. My research focuses on computational methods at intersection of artificial intelligence, machine learning and mathematical modeling. We develop a new generation of models that are more robust and reliable by bringing together machine learning, computer science, physical simulation, and probabilistic modeling. I have a passion for interdisciplinary projects, and my focus is on developing intelligent systems and digital twins informed by a wide range of disciplines from physics, climate science, biology, and energy to robotics and computer science. Some highlights of my career are: - 🤖 𝗔𝗜: I pioneered AI at Cisco with 4 flagship products at the intersection of AI and large-scale software and distributed systems, e.g., cybersecurity, enterprise networks, and the Internet. Portfolio of 5000+ enterprise customers, including many Fortune 50/500. - 🚀 𝗧𝗲𝗮𝗺 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽: I hired more than 50 engineers into Cisco, across 3 engineering teams built from the ground up, and multiple disciplines: data engineering, machine learning, cloud, backend, and frontend. - 💡 𝗥&𝗗 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: 225+ granted patents (60 pending) in the area of machine learning, networking, cybersecurity and distributed systems. I was in charge of the machine learning and software development group for Stealthwatch Learning Network (SLN), Cisco's next-generation cyber security platform, now known as Cisco Secure Network Analytics. This product turns every router and switch into a security agent capable of analyzing the behavior of every host and device on the network and triggering alerts in case of anomalies.
During this project, I held a highly technical, multi-faceted role:
Leader and manager of a world-class team of data scientists, software and system engineers.
Architect and lead developer of SLN's underlying real-time hyper-distributed learning platform (processing up to 100 billion events a day across 5000 routers).
Co-designer and co-inventor of the underlying technology based on distributed intelligence, machine learning, and edge computing (60+ patents).
