About

If you have a great tech product you should grow it fast and sustainably, while building out mighty, laser-focused Engineering organisations to achieve this! That's what I do with the Engineering orgs I set up and support and with the cross-functional leaders I collaborate. - I set up the Engineering product foundations for PMF and scale, often zero to one. - I support the growth of senior leaders, both IC and EMs, to create together amazing teams. - I create and scale out Engineering orgs that can move fast and go after their mission. I've been in Engineering for 26 years, I have a CS/ML PhD diploma somewhere in my closet and I've led teams up to 90 people. But all of this is not important. What's more important is that I keep leading my teams with excitement, curiosity and high sense of urgency and that together with my teams we create and scale products that deliver outstanding user value.

Lexiful b.v.

Founder, CEO

Aug 2013Oct 2016 · 3 yrs 2 mos · Amsterdam Area, Netherlands

  • Fully managed all aspects of my own company, including legal, financial, HR, as well as marketing and sales. In addition, I was the lead research engineer and managed a software development team of four programmers, to build together a complex cloud translation service.
  • Our fully scalable solution used Artificial Intelligence to automatically manage large crowds of translators to translate texts in collaboration with each other. Each translator brought his own level of expertise and unstable working schedule, and in this complex operating environment the system guaranteed translation quality and timely delivery while minimising cost. It also automated all administrative aspects of translation, from taking orders to accounting and beyond.
  • The service was fully developed and while it did not prove a commercial success due to strong competition from established players in the translation industry, it provided me with an incredible all-round business experience that simply money can’t buy.
  • Technologies used: Python, Javascript, Angular.js, node.js, HTML, CSS, Amazon Web Services (AWS) Cloud, PostgreSQL SQL Server, MongoDB NoSQL, Linux server.

The project included partners from Spain, Germany, France, Slovenia and the United Kingdom.
  • The project management tasks included work planning, co-ordination with the international partners to negotiate work package execution and timely delivery, time keeping, budgeting and so on.
  • In addition to functioning as a project manager, I also led the research and engineering activities for the part of the project concerning machine translation, patented one of my inventions, as well as co-led a bid to spin off the machine translation commercialisation activities of the research group in a new independent company.

Unisystems

Senior Software Engineer

Jan 2000Jan 2005 · 5 yrs · Athens, Greece

  • I programmed and managed information technology projects in the financial sector. I was responsible for the development from scratch and the maintenance of the Letters of Guarantee application for a large commercial bank (Alpha Bank).
  • I was also the leader of a small team that developed a clustered database and a distributed system to daily collect and centrally store and analyse all transaction logs from the hundreds of branches of the bank around the country. I was in my early twenties at the time.
  • My last assignment was to project manage the deployment of the first digitisation and automatic processing system for bank cheques in Greece. The project included the automatic recognition of printed as well as hand-written characters and training the OCR models was my first serious exposure to applied Artificial Intelligence. I was so inspired by the experience that I decided to quit my job and become an AI scientist.

Informatics Instructor

Jan 1998Jul 2000 · 2 yrs 6 mos · Athens, Greece

  • I logged more than 1000 instruction hours teaching adults on how to use Microsoft Office and the Internet (yes, people needed help with that back then). I learnt how to give effective presentations and how to pass on knowledge and skills, in order to empower people to use technology to do more with their lives.
  • Since then, communicating, teaching and mentoring has been something I immensely enjoy and has been a central part of all my roles and engagements throughout my career.

Self-employed

Developer, IT Consultant, (almost) Start-Up Founder

Jan 1997Aug 2000 · 3 yrs 7 mos · Athens, Greece

  • I worked on a variety of programming and web development projects, with the additional luck of being exposed early to international experience by working for a Norvegian shipping technology company to design and set-up their first dynamic website.
  • I also launched a fully featured Greek Internet auction site of my own. I coded everything myself, found out how to get the e-mails for most Greek Internet users of the time, developed an e-mail link click-through tracking mechanism when these things did not widely exist, got a few thousands of users on board and gave a small interview about the whole thing to a computer magazine. In the end I decided to move on with the IT consultant opportunity, as I felt that it was a time to learn more and do less.
