About

Lead AI Developer Advocate / Web Engineer / Creative Technologist at Google (14 years), with >20 years engineering experience. I create world firsts for global brands or research teams at the intersection of Artificial Intelligence, Web, research, and storytelling. I've pioneered and led the development & usage of multiple innovative AI driven prototypes using emerging technologies, which directly resulted in $X billion dollars in cost savings for Google, or added revenue streams for those that later evolved into products such as Cloud AutoML Vision, and I've reached millions of developers globally. I aim to innovate, inspire, and simplify processes in all areas I work on: https://bit.ly/WebAI23 I currently specialize in and lead Web AI at Google, mixing AI with the web ecosystem on both front and backend creating web apps that are real time, privacy preserving, and lower cost vs cloud counterparts. My goal is to empower all creative minds to leverage AI in JavaScript. 70% of professional developers use JS, beyond academia - in production. I founded the term Web AI in ~2022 to centralize the growing number of teams and external companies working in the space creating a community of engineers & creatives who think alike. We've now crossed >1B yearly downloads of Web AI libraries / models at Google, for which I was a key driving factor. My background is based in Computer Science. I fit into a rare breed of “Creative Engineers” - those that can be equally creative, innovative, and technical - going beyond just research. I use new tech to solve real problems, that inspires others to take action or makes an internal company process more efficient, while keeping in mind that front-end usability / user experience is just as important as the coding. Known for: ► Being a founding face of Web AI, representing it globally at Google IO: https://bit.ly/IOChina ► 1st Web AI course on Google Developers: https://goo.gle/Learn-WebML (>300K views) ► TensorFlow.js Show & Tell: https://goo.gle/made-with-tfjs ► World first prototypes that bring sci-fi to life or solve problems: + 1st ever Cloud AI model training system in 2016 (evolved into Google Cloud Auto ML Vision): https://bit.ly/AutoMLVision + Teleportation: https://bit.ly/3xPckNc + Invisibility: https://bit.ly/3wafH0F + AI powered Smart Mirror: https://bit.ly/44ev4Sh + Clothing size estimator: https://bit.ly/4aNdNCo ► Advocating Visual Blocks: https://bit.ly/4bewPBv ► Walking on wings of flying aeroplane! https://bit.ly/WingWalkVideo ► Web AI Newsletter here on LinkedIn: https://goo.gle/WebAINews

AI Coach (20% project)

May 2019Nov 2019 · 6 mos

  • 20% project to present and mentor the winners of the Google AI Impact challenge for social good - a program to support using emerging technologies to help us address big social, humanitarian and environmental problems.
  • Over the next 6 months I will act as an AI coach to one of the winners to ensure their success in building a robust, scalable, and accurate AI system to solve a real world social problem.
  • For this I have been paired with Wadhwani in India to help them grow their solution to identify pests in farmer's crops to reduce the use of fertiliser and to save money so the farmer can support themselves and their dependants. Left unchecked these pests can destroy over 50% of the yield of a crop leading to devastating effects for the farmer and the people who depend on them.

  • Working with the ZOO team at Google as a Creative Technologist / Web Engineer / Research Engineer
  • TLDR: I get to play with the hottest tech / APIs in the industry from both Google and third parties to create jaw dropping digital experiences that inspire both the general public and top tier brands globally.
  • The ZOO is a creative think tank tasked with using the latest Google technologies to create technical world firsts for our largest brands. We work with the world's leading creative agencies to then scale those prototypes out and captivate the world.
  • As part of a team of Creative Technologists, I generated a forward thinking tech-based vision for the ZOO. I was regularly called on to deploy creative and technical skills on huge projects for top advertisers. It was great to have the opportunity to dream big and develop cutting-edge creative technology concepts that redefined interactive storytelling.
  • Key Responsibilities:
  • Collaborated on the ideation and development of “never been done before” digital experiences in partnership with top brands and agencies.
  • Contributed to the development of cutting edge prototypes in the field of creative technology.
