Silvio Savarese is an Executive Vice President and Chief Scientist at Salesforce Research and Adjunct Faculty at Stanford University. Previously, he was a tenured Associate Professor at Stanford, where he was appointed the inaugural Mindtree Faculty Scholar and served as Director of the SAIL-Toyota Center for AI Research (2016–2018). Silvio is an Executive Vice President and Chief Scientist of Salesforce Research as well as an Adjunct Faculty of Computer Science at Stanford University where he served as an Associate Professor with tenure until winter 2021. At Stanford he was appointed as the inaugural Mindtree Faculty Scholar in 2018 and served as a Director of the SAIL-Toyota Center for AI Research from 2016-2018. Prior to Stanford, he was an Assistant Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, from 2008-2013. He earned his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from the California Institute of Technology in 2005 and was a Beckman Institute Fellow at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign from 2005–2008. He has been a member of SEA.com’s board of directors since 2024.
Dr. Savarese addresses theoretical foundations and applications of various AI disciplines, including ML, generative AI and robotics. He has published more than 400 scientific articles in top-tier journals and conferences. He was Program Chair of the Conference on Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition (CVPR) in 2020 and an Associate Editor of IEEE Transactions on Pattern Analysis and Machine Intelligence (PAMI) from 2016-2019.
Dr. Savarese has been the recipient of several awards, including a Best Paper Award at the IEEE International Conference on Robotics and Automation (ICRA) in 2019; Best Paper Award at the Conference on Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition (CVPR) in 2018; Best Student Paper Award at CVPR 2016; a James R. Croes Medal in 2013; an NSF Career Award in 2011; and two Google Research Awards (2020, 2010). His work has been featured in various media outlets, including the NYT, CBS, PBS, Financial Times, Quartz, ABC, BBC, Corriere Della Sera, and La Repubblica.
Dr. Savarese was a successful video game designer. His games, co-developed with his father, were published and distributed to the US, France, Russia, and Italy.
