* Author of the High Yield Economics weekly newsletter on LinkedIn * Author of the forthcoming book "The Best Decisions You'll Ever Make: An Economist's Guide to Saving Time, Making Money, and Living Well" * Wrote the international bestseller "Outrageous Fortunes: The Twelve Surprising Trends That Will Reshape the Global Economy" * Launched the Economic Research function at Instawork, a Y Combinator-backed and Forbes "Next Billion-Dollar Startup" marketplace company * Launched the Thought Leadership function at Dalberg, a global consulting firm focused on economic development * Founded smarterscout.com, the first public advanced analytics platform for soccer players, which was acquired by Vantage FC * Previously on the staff of The Economist, The New York Times, Foreign Policy; faculty at New York University's Stern School of Business; economic advisor in the British government Until my decision to leave in June 2024, I was the first chief economist at Instawork, a Y Combinator, Forbes Next Billion, and Inc 5000 company that is the leading staffing platform for hourly workers and businesses. I launched the Economic Research function and led the analysis of our realtime data, helping us to learn about trends and behavior among the hourly workers making up half of the labor market. Previously I founded North Yard Analytics LLC, a consulting firm specializing in sports analytics, especially for soccer/football. NYA's clients included Premier League and Champions League clubs, as well as other teams, agents, managers, and software developers around the world. NYA's flagship product was smarterscout.com, the first advanced analytics platform for football that was available online to the public. It was acquired by Vantage FC in 2023. NYA has also been involved in other sports, including with USA Olympic teams. I remain an active investor in sports; I currently sit on the Board of Directors at Calgary Wild FC in the Northern Super League. Before my detour into sports, I was an economics columnist at The Economist, The New York Times, and Foreign Policy, where I was also senior editor for economics and creator of the Baseline Profitability Index. I've written several books on economics and economic policy, and I taught long-term global macroeconomic forecasting at New York University's Stern School of Business. I was also the first director of thought leadership at Dalberg and an economic advisor in the British government, working mainly on crime, illicit drugs, and immigration.
