About

Seasoned engineering executive with ~20 years of experience driving innovation, transformative business growth and engineering excellence across large, global organizations. Abhita leads Google Drive's engineering team: a globally distributed org of 400+ engineers across 4 timezones that enable a billion+ consumers and enterprise users to store and access their content securely in the cloud. In this role, her hands-on leadership spans a variety of areas including large-scale distributed systems, front-end technologies, data security, privacy, system reliability, regulatory compliance and crafting GenAI features that enhance user productivity. In addition to leading technical strategy and execution, she excels at partnering closely with Product Management, UX, Data Science, Sales, Marketing and multiple cross-org engineering teams in managing the overall business. Her experience in Ads spanned everything from product engineering to core backend infrastructure serving ads on mobile apps, web, video and programmatic. Over the years, the products/systems Abhita and her teams have built are some of Google’s largest business-critical systems handling XXXM queries per second, 10s of billions of dollars in annual revenue and used by billions of users. Prior to Google, Abhita worked at Yahoo! where she had the opportunity to build multiple components of Yahoo’s Advertising business from scratch. Abhita started her career at Oracle, where she worked on Oracle’s enterprise management suite of products. Abhita holds a Masters in Computer Science from Stanford University and a Bachelors in Computer Science and Engineering from Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kharagpur. Strengths: * Leading product engineering teams and/or platform engineering teams with a product component * Evaluating customer needs, product goals and business objectives and translating them into meaningful engineering solutions that are feasible for teams to deliver * Driving “big picture” strategy while also having the capability to provide detailed technical guidance to the team, enabling them to execute and deliver more effectively * Defining and leading large-scale projects requiring cross-functional, cross-geo collaboration * Building high-performing and collaborative teams

  • May 2022 - Now: Senior Director, Engineering on Google Drive
  • Leading the Google Drive engineering org (400+ SWEs) that is responsible for the full Drive engineering stack, spanning everything from frontend/client to backend/storage. Drive is both a product and a platform for the broader Workspace suite of apps. The product-facing part of the org builds the Drive experience across web, iOS, Android and desktop which now primarily involves GenAI-powered Intelligence & Search features to reimagine how we can improve productivity. The platform part of the org is focused largely on infrastructure, storage (blobs and metadata), processing (asynchronous and batch), security & compliance, video infrastructure and processing, the sharing experience across Workspace, Drive APIs for 3P developers and the full-stack infrastructure to upload/pick and view content from Drive, YouTube, Photos etc. used across many Google products. We build features for consumers + enterprise + edu users and work closely with other Google product areas (Google Deep Mind, NotebookLM, Android, Google One, Edu, Core, Cloud, etc.) to ensure we’re building the best storage experience across all flagship Google products.
  • April 2018 - April 2022: Engineering Director on AdMob, Google's advertising product for Mobile Apps (https://admob.google.com) which monetizes content for 2M+ mobile apps. My org worked across the full stack ranging from frontend client and server work, API, schema layers, backend stack, reporting and many, many processing pipelines.
  • June 2009 - March 2018: Led multiple high impact projects across the entire spectrum of Apps, Video & Display Ads Infrastructure focusing both on core backend infrastructure as well as product-specific verticals like app ads and programmatic advertising.
