About

I have always been excited in the formation stage of things. The early stuff. Who is the customer? What is the product? How do we sell it? That is the exciting part of something new. The early stages is where all the truly hard problems arise and you have to put your chips on the table to support an audacious idea. After playing the game 3X as a venture funded CEO, I am now bankrolling no-safety-net people as a VC. Martin Tobias is the Managing Partner and Founder of Incisive Ventures, an early-stage venture capital firm focused on investing in the first institutional round of B2B software companies that reduce friction at scale. Martin was previously at Accenture and Microsoft and is a former Venture Partner at Ignition Partners. Martin is a 3X venture-funded CEO raising over $500M as CEO with two IPOs who has also invested in hundreds of companies and is a limited partner in over a dozen VC funds. Martin was an early investor in Google, Docusign, Deel, and over a dozen Unicorns. His background as an Operator is highly sought after by Founders. Martin has a double major in computer science and business and continues to develop proprietary software that gives his investing activities (and the founders he backs) an unfair advantage. Martin is the father of 3 daughters, a cyclist, surfer, poker player, and life hacker. Martin tinkers with motorcycles on the weekends. He writes about Venture Capital on [Incisive Ventures](https://incisive.vc/insight/) blog and [Twitter](https://twitter.com/martingtobias). Open to connecting with founders building in B2B software very early. Hit me up on Twitter, not here.

Loudeye technologies

Chairman, Founder and CEO

Aug 1997Dec 2000 · 3 yrs 4 mos · Greater Seattle Area

  • I started Loudeye (formerly encoding.com) with the vision that digital audio and video would become an every day part of most people's lives. Remember, this was 1997 when the standard internet connection was 14.4, you had to buy a sound and video card separate, Microsoft had no music player, Real had only audio technologies, Quicktime was for CD only and no-one had ever heard of MP3. Well I was early, but right. Started with 3 people, left the company three years later with 450 employees and $110M in the bank. Loudeye became the leading infrastructure provider for digital audio and video businesses eventually selling to Nokia in 2006

Manager

  • International IT organization. First project was to convince Microsoft Management that they could not run their company's back-office on OS/2 and PC applications. That was hard for a culture of dog food eaters. Helped set up systems to support Eastern European offices including stints in Moscow, Sweden, England, Ireland, Prague, a year in Italy and two years in Munich. Designed the first accounting and license tracking system for Select and MOLP, the first iterations of enterprise volume licensing. Very fun years, great people.

Senior Programmer

  • Can you program Cobol or RPG 400? Well I was really good at it. Even have a patent related to AS/400 screen navigation. Great job just out of school because they work you like a dog and you learn fast in a couple different industries. Microsoft hired Andersen to figure out their international back office systems and I was one of the first three Andersen Consultants out to Microsoft. I remember the first meeting we showed up in out suits and ties and the Msft guys freaked out. Had to get a special release from AC management in Chicago to not wear suits, the first such waiver ever given. Do you believe that companies used to have dress codes?? Me either.
