He was actively involved with the Centre of Educational Technology, IIT Kharagpur in a Pedagogic research project, sponsored by MHRD, GoI. He also authored two books and also contributed a chapter of the Encyclopedia of Life Support System (EOLSS) published under the UNESCO project. Prof Pathak carried out industrial projects in the country and abroad in collaboration with many countries like the UK, Slovakia, Slovenia, China, Austria, Italy, Papua New Guinea, and Australia. Environmental Protection Agency of the Republic of Ireland, through Imperial College, implemented the environmental noise modeling approach of Prof. Pathak's Ph.D. work for an ecological noise map of the country in 2002. Known for innovative contributions to Environmental Management, he is a council member of Mining, Geological, and Metallurgical Institute of India, and President of the Institution of Engineers (India) Kharagpur Local Chapter. He received the National Geo Science Award for 2014 from the President of India, besides other awards like Bala Tandan award for the year 2007-2008 and Sir John Dunn Medal for 2008-2009 awarded by the Mining, Geological and Metallurgical Institute of India (MGMI)
