Adc • global awards & club

President

Jan 2024Present · 2 yrs 3 mos · New York, NY

  • The Art Directors Club of New York (ADC) was founded in 1920 by Earnest Elmo Calkins. Calkins had organized the first advertising art and design exhibit in New York City in 1908 and saw a need for an organization that would “dignify the field of business art in the eyes of artists”, emphasizing his belief that “artistic excellence is vitally necessary" for successful marketing and advertising.
  • The Club's first award was designed in 1920 by celebrated American sculptor Paul Manship, who created the statue of Prometheus in Rockefeller Center in Manhattan.
  • In 1921, the club hosted their first juried exhibition with work from over 250 contributors.
  • By 1947, the Club's work was being credited with an increase in commercial art and design standards throughout the United States.
  • The ADC has honored Andy Warhol, Corita Kent, Paola Antonelli, Walt Disney, Ray and Charles Eames, Eiko Ishioka, Annie Leibovitz, Gordon Parks and Andy Warhol, among others.
  • The Club launched ADC Young Guns in 1996 as a showcase for emerging creative leaders. It is a portfolio-based competition for creative professionals 30 years of age or under and has grown to become one of the most coveted accolades in the global creative community.
  • Honorees include James Victore, Jessica Walsh, Timothy Goodman, Olimpia Zagnoli, Menno Kluin, Dana Tanamachi, Christoph Neimann, Ohni Lisle, Kerby Jean-Raymond, Mah Ferraz and Tré Seals.
  • Today, the Art Directors' Club includes art directors, writers, illustrators, photographers, typographers, artists, UX/UI and product designers, industrial designers and filmmakers from around the world working in design, advertising, entertainment, film, digital media and artificial intelligence.
  • The Club has inspired many similar initiatives around the world, including D&AD / Design and Art Direction (London, 1964), Le Club des D.A. (Paris, 1967) and The Art Directors Club of Europe (Barcelona, 1990).

The one club for creativity

Officer / National Board of Directors

Oct 2016Present · 9 yrs 6 mos · New York City Metropolitan Area

  • The One Club for Creativity exists to support and celebrate the success of the global creative community. We are a diverse tribe of creative thinkers and doers who believe creativity is the most powerful element to business success.
  • We celebrate world-changing ideas. We stimulate the dynamic intersection of art and commerce. We create fertile spaces for writers, art directors, designers, technologists, and artists to grow. We foster a more diverse and connected global community. We forge bonds between recognized creative masters and emerging creative voices.
  • Most important, we are a non-profit organization that pours everything we make back into nurturing a more vibrant and inspired global creative community.
  • The One Club for Creativity also leads The Art Directors Club. The ADC is one of the most concentrated groups of creative talent in the world, and is a gathering place for leaders in visual communication. ADC Members share the vision of its founder, Louis Pedlar, who brought his colleagues in advertising together in 1920 to dignify their profession and judge advertising art by the same stringent standards as fine art.
  • For over ninety years ADC members have taken up Pedlar’s challenge by funding programs for creative professionals around the world. Each year ADC brings together the best minds in the creative industries to celebrate the winners of our Annual Awards and Young Guns competitions, help a new generation of creative leaders rise up through the National Student Portfolio Reviews and Saturday Career Workshops, and celebrate the achievements of Hall of Fame inductees and GrandMasters recipients.
