I build AI products and teams that make a difference in people’s everyday lives. I have been a product developer, team leader, as well as a Founding CEO in AI, cloud, and mobile for 30 years. My teams and I have been responsible for: - Artificial intelligence and data engineering and research, AI strategy, ethics, cloud infrastructure, regulatory compliance, and security across the 26 Orange Group countries - Inventing one of Facebook’s first strategic machine learning programs in 2013 - Building Windows connectivity for iPod - Founding the first mobile + social media + enterprise data science company, leading to my job at Facebook - Creating the first mobile photo sharing service outside of Japan in 2002 - Conceiving and launching the first mobile app store in 1996 with Tony Fadell - Working on the first mobile browser at General Magic including the world’s first demonstration of mobile web browsing I was Founding CEO of three companies in the US and UK, a company officer in two scale-ups, and worked or consulted at Apple, Facebook, Google, Audible (acquired by Amazon), and Microsoft.   • My team and I led Facebook's technical and business strategy for connecting people in Africa to the Internet including backhaul connectivity, rural cellular solutions, subsea cable including 2Africa, and satellite connectivity. I was a primary contributor to our involvement in TIP (Telecom Infra Project) and helped create Open RAN.

We then built an engineering team and launched the Ofoto Mobile Service, the first mobile online photo service in the world outside of Japan. Ofoto Mobile supported mobile photo browsing, upload, sharing, and print ordering.
  • The service was available in ten languages and licensed to AT&T, China Mobile, O2 UK, T-Mobile UK and SFR. It was also preloaded by on tens of millions of phones from Nokia, SonyEricsson and Motorola.
  • Ofoto was acquired by Kodak for $300MM and rebranded KODAK Gallery.

  • Tony Fadell at Apple hired me and my engineering team to add Windows connectivity to the iPod. Before the iPod launch in October 2001, the secret team was referred to only as ‘Special Hardware Projects’.
  • In addition to Windows connectivity for the iPod, my team was responsible for a number of other early iPod software projects, some of which were later incorporated into the first iPhone.

  • As a consultant to the CTO of Audible, I conceived of, defined the feature set, designed the user interface, and managed the development of the AudiblePlayer, which was the world’s first mobile audio app.
  • Audible was acquired by Amazon for $300MM.
  • As told to Lex Fridman in a June 2022 interview, the Audible app helped inspire Tony Fadell to build the iPod.

  • I was hired to Philips Electronics by the late Blake Krikorian (later CEO of Slingbox) and Tony Fadell (later VP of iPod and CEO of Nest) to run software product management on the award-winning, Windows CE-based Velo 1 and Nino.
  • While at Phiips, I invented and launched the world's first commercial app store in May 1997. Branded Philips MobileSoft, the service was available in 50 countries and was the first example of mobile app DRM as well as one-time purchase and paid subscription models. Many of these features later informed the design of the Apple iTunes store.
  • At the time, Chris Shipley of DemoLetter hailed it in her newsletter as ‘genius’ and ‘is exactly what is needed to kick start the smartphone market.’
