Kimberly Brinkhuis — Product Designer
I'm convinced that design is for anyone independent of your users: ability, disability, energy, knowledge, time, budget, language, age, etc. I strive daily for universal design that's: usable, inclusive, divers, ethical, human-centered, honest, sustainable, etc. Through inclusive research and user tests that zoom in on the different "needs" users have, as every user has the same "want" to use a product or service. I say yes to accessibility, inclusivity and universality at the core of the design and research process everyday. My story is that I was a sighted graphic designer, and now am a blind universal & meaningful tactile designer and an UX researcher. I have a huge love for light, due to what I still see, but also my love for the color yellow and the god of light, art and honesty: Apollo-Phoebus. My statements: "Us disabled people, we are so much more then disability. We are consumers, visitors, enjoyers, users, gamers, spectators, people: just like you and I." “Universal design is beautiful, pristine and immaculate.” “Disabled people should never be hidden i your target group; we are here.” “If accessibility is an afterthought, then it isn't true accessibility now is it? No, only when it is at the core." "Everybody should be able and allowed to enjoy design” 🟢 To answer my most frequently asked question: why do I write visual alt-text on top of the embedded alt-text? -- This is simply for accessibility, not everybody who benefits from a description has the means like an screenreader to access these, like those are low vision or deaf-blind. Aside from that it helps everyone who doesn’t fully understand the image and provides extra information and context to the topics in the image. [light hearted tone] And I simply do it because I can, so I will (: Visual description: I got wavy dark dirty blonde hair, that I myself cut into bangs and layers that fall till half long, deep sky blue eyes and a button nose. I'm quite short about 5.3 feet. I adore colored clothes with tactile textures and interesting shapes. I mostly wear gold jewelry, but also love mixed metals with bronze, rose and silver. I always wear an old gold coin around my neck, a small nudge to the coin one gives when crossing the river Styx (Greek mythology), the coin is not perfectly round and has a design of my star sign: Sagittarius on it.
