Working with a high-performing team to develop Self-Balancing Clusters from scratch - Confluent's balancing solution for Kafka.
At a high level, it:
has every broker export metrics about its resource usage (throughput, disk, cpu, metrics per locally-hosted topic)
collects all this data in a Kafka topic
has a single "leader" Balancer component in the cluster read this and create an in-memory model of the cluster
runs this model through a greedy, heuristic bin-packing algorithm to optimize it (move partitions around)
incrementally applies this new model onto the cluster, so that it becomes reality
This product is critical in maintaining Confluent's large fleet of Kafka clusters running in a performant, stable and cloud-native way.
elasticity: critical in ensuring customers can horizontally scale their clusters up and down (because the data needs to move across brokers).
performance: critical in alleviating hot spots both proactively and reactively (in record time), so as to allow customers to fully utilize their promised resource usage
