Jayakrishnan is presently an INSA Senior Scientist at the Department of Chemistry, University of Kerala, Trivandrum. He was a Raja Ramanna Fellow of the Department of Atomic Energy, Government of India, at the Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Biotechnology, Trivandrum, Kerala India from October 14, 2019 to April 13, 2023. Jayakrishnan retired as Professor from the Department of Biotechnology, Indian Institute of Technology, Madras on June 30, 2018. He was Vice Chancellor of the University of Kerala from December 2008 to December 2012 as well as VC of the Cochin University of Science and Technology between February 2009 and January 2010. Before moving to IIT Madras as a full Professor, he was a senior scientist at the Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute of Medical Sciences and Technology, Trivandrum. He obtained his M. Sc in Chemistry from the University of Calicut in 1975 and Ph.D from the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras in 1980. He was a postdoc at the University of Florida, Gainesville, USA from 1981 to 1984. He has been a Visiting Scientist or a Visiting Professor to the University of Florida, USA, University of Liverpool, UK, University of Paris (XI), France, EPFL Switzerland and JSPS Fellow at Toyo University, Japan. Jayakrishnan’s interest is in the field of polymeric materials for medical applications. He has authored over 100 original research papers as well as many invited reviews and is an inventor or a co-inventor in over a dozen patents and a member of the editorial board of many international journals. He was elected as Fellow of the Indian National Science Academy (FNA), New Delhi in 2016.
