  • The study presented in the current research focuses on the static and dynamic analysis of Tehri Dam. The analysis was conducted using numerical simulation and a Finite Element Method (FEM) software. The main objectives of the study were to determine the factor of safety in the case of sudden drawdown and to assess the permanent deformation of the dam due to earthquakes. For sudden drawdown analysis, the normal pool level of Tehri Dam at EL 835m was lowered to EL 740m. The factor of safety values obtained from the static stability analysis during low drawdown is 1.662 at the crest of the dam. Additionally, the factor of safety values at locations H/3 and 2H/3 (where H represents the dam height) are found to be 1.525 for both locations. In terms of seismic analysis, two earthquakes were considered: the 1991 Uttarkashi earthquake with a magnitude of Ms 7.2, and the earthquake the dam has been currently designed for with a magnitude of Mw 7.0. The behavior of both the dam body and its foundation is described using the Mohr-Coulomb criterion. The results of the analysis indicated a factor of safety of 1.525 for the static analysis at the crest of the dam, as well as at locations H/3 and 2H/3. For the dynamic analysis, the factor of safety obtained was 1.17. Regarding displacements, the maximum total displacements for both static and dynamic analyses were found to be under 1% of the dam height. In conclusion, the study provides important insights into the stability and behavior of Tehri Dam. The factor of safety values indicates stable conditions during sudden drawdown and seismic events. The displacements remain within acceptable limits.
