I've spent 30 years building enterprise technology from the ground up, operating systems, virtualization, networking software, cloud infrastructure. Which is probably why I get uncomfortable when people build the next layer without understanding what's underneath it. My career has taken me from distributed systems at Akamai and VMware, to co-founding BlueData (acquired by HPE), to serving as Global CTO at HPE where I led global enterprise software strategy. Today I'm a Venture Partner at Canaan Partners, working with early-stage founders building the foundational layers of the AI Enterprise era. I've had the privilege of watching Silicon Valley evolve through mainframes, PCs, workstations, the internet, mobile, and cloud. Nothing compares to what we are living through now. The AI revolution isn't another wave. It's a different ocean. My current passion as a venture capitalist is working with founders on hard problems, bringing whatever I've accumulated as an architect, engineer, R&D executive, and founder to help them navigate their journey a little better. Putting a small dent in the universe, one founder at a time. On the technology side, my thinking right now lives at the intersection of foundation models and enterprise adoption, the distillation economy, the new agentic stack, and synthetic data, feedback loops, and the physical manifestation of AI. I don't have all the answers. I share thoughts freely, sketch architectures occasionally, and am always up for a grounded, honest debate.
